POLICE COURT NEWS j LOVERS' TROUBLES. ASSAULT CHARGE DISMISSED. An unusual case was hoard at the Footscray Court on Thursday, be fore Messrs. W. Mitchell, H. E. Cal decott, Drs. .M'Carthy and J. Box, J's.P., when John Munro, a young man, was charged with having un lawfully assaulted Annie Stephen. Mr. Levy appeared for complainant, and Mr. A. C. Sei?oml) for defendant. Annie Stephen, married woman, re siding at (i'i Ryan-street, Footscray, stated—On Friday night last I was in Nicholson-street with my two sisters, and saw defendant pass in company with my cousin. When de fendant was passing, he made a grimace at me, and shook his . coat tails. (.Laughter.) Mr Mitchell was a gentleman who had been as sociated with Footscray for. a great many years. That gen tleman had chosen Footscray as his home 60 years ago, set tled! here as a youth, and em barked .in business,- winning the hand of one of the fairest ladies in Footscray then, Miss Powell, who had helped him in a graceful way. Practical Sympathy .A rather disasterous fire oc cured in Geelong road recently resulting in "a very severe loss to the owner and occupier. Tliei building was insured but only for a small sum and, the occupier Mrs Runs,- who is a new arrival in this country waff placed in rather straiten ed circumstances. Mrs Cuth bert assisted by Mrs and Mas ter J ohn Barclay viewed the situation [ from a practical, standpoint and the result was that donations to the amount of over £11 were collected by the above mentioned persons, for this highly deserving cause.
