District News. Orroroo. DECEMBER 8. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 16 December 1887
District News. Orroroo. DECEMBER 8. Since writing you last we have passed through some most remarkable weather lor j this season of the year, having had a week of 1 intensely cold, winter-'ike weather, during which we totalled about three quarters of an inch of rain, which has had a beneficial effect tipon the late sown crops, but has very largely ; retarded the reaping, which would otherwise ; have been commenced in the early sown paddocks. Since the beginning of the month, however, the weather has been more -settled,. and reaping is being vigorously engaged in OA many farms around here. I have not .. heard of any delivery of new wheat in Orroroo as yet. Business is rather dull, but. we are expecting it to increase shortly. DECEMBER 14. We are experiencing most unpro pitious weather for . harvesting oper ations, which are ail but at a stand stilland farmers are becoming very anxious, as the highly electric state of the atmosphere bodes no good to the standing crops. liain hitherto ...

Quorn. December 13. After-the great heat we were visited 'on Sunday evening by a severe thunder storm and heavy rain, the lightning being most vivid, with loud thunder. About 4 p.m. heavy rain set in, and continued to fall till a late hour, Nearly all the creeks were flooded, and the railway lifle damaged slighily in vari ous places.; The rain must have fallen a good deal further North, as I hear of the line hating been damaged as far as Blackfellow's Creek. It is reported that about three inches of rain fell sit Mount jlrddn and various other places surroundings but only about 600 points fell here. The weather is very un settledr^-strong north winds, dust, and heat.-^ ?Register.

A Model Dairy Farm. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 16 December 1887
A Model Dairy Farm. Tile occupation of the latter days of Lord Hampdeil (Sir Henry f^ouverie W. Brand, G.C.B., born 1814) is dairy fanning. The late Speaker has dabbled iii dairy farming ere he ceased to control the amenities of debate iri the House of Com mofts, but when he gave place to Mr Peel he Settled down at his country seat, ahd set himself to solve one of the great problems ot British agriculture* The mind which presided over parliamen tary procedure is entirely, given up to pastoral pursuits 5 the pro duction of milk and the manu^ facture of butter are now , its most serious concerns, instead of the discrimination between the language of debate and the discipline of unruly members. Lord Hampden's choice of a hobby with which, to ^ occupy his well-earned leisure is, how ever, laudable in the extreme. The extent to which England is dependent upon the dairy produce of the foreigner is & disgrace to English farming!, With its mdtchless pastures and [meadows. If Lord Ha...
