The Secret of Life. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

The Secret of Life. Jf I were asked to name the one thing towaids which, more than towards any other thing, man's ; accurate - yet reverent, eye is directed to-day with deepest interest, I should answer it is Life N6t its symptoms only, nor its incidents alone ; but liie itself, in all its essence, and dignity and power. And this, despite the mystery wherein it is always en shrouded. Indeed, as fast as V no wledgegrows, the sense of mastery dc pen p. ?? ?* } ! ? The more we realize that, even after the most diligent endeavours, we cannot, with our mental faculties, ascertain accurately what life actually is, the more kei n, subtle, and undistracted do our observa tions become of what th- effects of life are upon the material in which it is led There are comparatively, but few minds which, by tl-eir constitution and environment^' :- -can apply themselves un in'teiTuptediy to the abstruce study of Life in the abstract. To most of us it is largely made up merely of incident. And yet ju...

Hebrew Micrography. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

[?] The art of minute baottyritipg 19 one which tot several centuries has flourished among the Jews. The Jewish scribe who devoted iii's' life to the writing of 'Scrolls of the law attains' such facility in his profession that there is5 scarcely any limit to which his qull can accomplish. The immense care which tradition prescribes in the .preparation of such scrolls combines with the religious fervor which such ah occupation engenders to quicken the artistic impulse and carry it to a high degree of perfection. ' ? There are no more beautiful -specimens of caligraphy extant;* says the Jewish' Chronicle, than are to be found in the ordinary Scrolls of the Law and Esther Scrolls which are possessed by every Synagogue. The micrographi^ art i^ ' a natural development of this handwriting, resulting from the requirements of the ritual in regard td; TephiUin and Mezuzahs, for which the scribe writes lengthy passages of Scripture on small strips of1 'parchment. THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY. THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY. THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS. ??:?.'*' EJy bABBiXi. Weiss. To go into every detail of the rise and origin of 'Christianity would require nlor^ th& av column or two of a newspaper. Yet a great deal may be said in a few worls that will enlighten the ordinary mind on this subject. Cnristiariity, as it is, we are told by some dev^teesVisthe culmination of Old Testament prophecy, but it is the most unreasonable theory any theology could conceive that makes it so ; for, although J^sus is ordinarily' called the founder of Christianity, it is incontrover ibly true' that he never abrogated Judaism, nor established another religion; and it is a con ceded fact that he lived arid died a Jew. He ur£etl' that the commandments-^the ground work of Judaism, be followed, and all his teachings were those1 that Jews Had ledrned lonj*;' before he came into existence: Thfese things we learri from the New Testament. All teachings contrary to this were the inventions of'&a...

So Let It Be. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

So Let It Be. i , . ; Smallest. twings across our pathway ; Sometimes trip unwary feet; ... While we wouM not think of stumbling : O'er the larger branch we meet. Over daily, petty troubles, . There come many a sigh and groan,. . While we lift the mountain hindrance Oft in silence and alone. ; Luscious berries are found hanging Underneath their shading leaves ; Heaviest grain bends 'rieath its burden, : Counting fullest headed sheaves. Did we search as well for fruitage, : Hidden 'neath God's shading leaves, Would we see the crown and honor As our burden bends or grieves ? . . . ; ; Days of cloud with naught of sunshine, : Make more eagar for the light ; Wearied souls in deepest darknees Seek God's hands to lead aright. Disappointment and vexation Teach there is a surer way : E'en the night of sorrow bringeth Lessons never learned by day. Out of every dispensation Earth may grandest problems prove : And we've learned life's sweetest lesson, :. When we we've found that God is love. ?...

Is Judaism a Proselyting Religion? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

Is Judaism a Proselyting Religion I We all know that Israel has a mission. We feel that history teaches this. THe portion of this week begins with the Divine command to Abraham, u Get thW bui from thy lani . . , to the land which I will show thee. . . . . And be thou a blessing.' The whole chapter (Gen. xii) is replete with evidence that our grea't ancestor built altars in many places in the land of Canaan, and taught religious truth as he conceived it. The conservers of tradition explain many passages in such a manner as doubly to assure us that Abraham taught by discourse as well as by deed. He took with him from M eso'potamia his wife, his nephew Lot, and 'the souls that he had made in Haran.' The 'souls' w.ere, according to rabinical interpretation, the fellow-beings whom they had won to the belief in one Spiritual God. Furthermore, Abraham made converts among the men, Sarah among the women. /phis is evidence that the men of Mishna and, Gomara considered it a function of Judaism...

Mr. Louis Pulver. FUNERAL ON SUNDAY NEXT. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

c Mr. Louis Pulver. EUNERAL ON SUNDAY NEXT. ; ? Mr. Louis Pulver passed quietly away at the Sydney Hospital yesterday at 3.43 p m. Our reporter found, on enquiring, that Mr. Pulver's mortal remains had been removed to the morgue for private reasons. No definite arrangements had been made up to the time of going to press as to the funeral, etc. The funeral train leaves the Mortuary on Sunday afternoon at 2.25. - The same precedent is to be followed as in the instance of a previous head master of the Hebrew schools, the late Mr. Isaacs; but we cannot state definitely from where the cortege will start. Miss 'Pulver is at her residence, Adelaide -st., Woollahra. Deep sympathy is expressed on all sides at the loss, and we shall obtain a portrait and biography for production in our next issue as a memorial of one who has done so much and taken such pains for the advancement and education of Jewish children.

The Young Nurse. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

Tlje Young flurse. Some years since when the cholera heaped graves over terrified Europe, a Jewess was attacked by that terrible scourge, and after five hours of .suffering ceased to exist. Her young daughter bestowed the most zealous care; aud whilst the fear of the epidemic prevented any one approaching the patient, Esther alone watched her mother with a scourge, patience, and gentleness only found among females actuated by noble feeling. Towards dusk, the physician of the district came to make the last visit which the laws required, previous to the interment ; and when he pronounced ' She is indeed dead and must be buried to-morrow '.' struck -by the horror of her situation, Esther sank in grief, and her lamentations were heard afar off. In vain they endeavoured to fcrce her from the death chamber. She saH, with firmness, ' I will not leave my mother until the tomb encloses her.' Remaining alone, sho took the icy hand of nor mother, co ering it. with tears and kisses ; and with a...

New Synagogue. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 5 November 1897

Mew Synagogue* Yet another new Synagogue has arisen to remind us of the increasing strength of the Jewish community in London. The new South Hackney Synagogue, in DevonsHire-road, formerly opened on September 19th by the Hon. Walter Rothschild has been erected from the designs of the Jewish, architect, - Mr. Delissa Joseph. In the new temple of Israel, which is built of red prick and stone, there is seating accommodation for about five hundred wcrshippers, and, according to. the old Hebrew custom the gallery is reserved for ladies. Connected with the central building, there are class rooms below providiLg accommodation for three hund red persons, which will be used for religious instruction and festivities. In case of fire there are numerous exits and the main structure is fire-proof, very little wood work being used. The building has been about ten months in construction, aud cost over £6000. As befits so auspicious an occasion, Ihe Chief Rabbi (Dr. H. Adler) was assisted by the Re...
