ST. KILDA RACES. [Newspaper Article] — The Argus — 2 January 1849

ST. KILDA RACES. This annual meeting which seems as- suming greater interest every year of its existence, came off yesterday. The day was exceedingly favourable, much more so, indeed, than so singular a season as this has been, would have allowed us to hope for. The attendance was very much larger than upon any former occasion, reminding us more of what we have been accustomed to see upon the Melbourne race course, than of a mere bye-race, as that of St. Kilda has generally been con- sidered. The interest excited by the various events strongly showed the penchant to- wards horse-racing, which the finest horse- breeding country in the world might natu- rally be expected to exhibit, and we trust that we may long find that the undeniable advantages, which a fair trial of speed, wind, strength, courage, and endurance   has ever been found to produce upon the character and usefulness of the horse, may secure us an occasional holiday de- voted to such pursuits, in spite of th...

The Argus.   I am in the place where I am demanded of conscience to speak the truth, and therefore the truth I speak, impugn it whoso list."   FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1849. ENGLISH NEWS. By the Martin Luther, we have home news to the 21st September, but there is not much of interest in the ¡ntelligence. The Queen and the royal family were quietly domiciled at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, where her Majesty was making herself very popular, every new bulletin from the press, announcing some act of condescension, endearing her to the people. Among others we may in- stance her presence at Invercauld, to witness the athletic games of " putting the stane," &c. Her Majestey had also been climbing the heights of "dark Lochnagar." Fresh disturbances had broken out in Waterford, Tipperary, and the other southern districts of Ireland, but they were speedily quelled, and seem to have borne more the character of agrarian outrage, than political insurrection. The le...

MELBOURNE MARKETS. Thursday, Jan. 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Argus — 5 January 1849

MELBOURNE MARKETS. Thursday, Jan. 4. Grain—A slight reduction in the price of wheat has taken place, which has been effected by the sudden and beneficial change in the weather which at last promises to allow the ripening, and gather- ing in of the crops. Good quality is now selling at 3s 6d per bushel. Some farmers in the neigh- borhood of the city, have made arrangements to begin the harvest on Monday or Tuesday next, and it is expected that it will be general in the course of 10 days, excepting at Kilmore, and such distances from town, where it will be fully three weeks later. Notwithstanding the severity of the season, and the consequent shortness of the ears, the ensuing, is expected to exceed an average harvest ; Van Diemen's Land oats, are selling at 4s 3d per bushel ; none of home growth have yet been sent to market. Flour—First quality £10 ; seconds £9 per 2000 lbs, at the Mills. The dealers anticipate a reduction of £1 per ton, taking place soon. Hay.—In consequence of the ...
