THE LEASING SYSTEM AGAIN. TO THE EDITOR OF THE MINING RECORD. [Newspaper Article] — The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser — 2 November 1867

THE LEASING SiSTEM AGAIN. [?] Sin— However much tho syatem of leasing on the gold-fiulds, under Mr. Wilson's act, niay retard the progress of the gold-fields, it is of courso open to overv one, until there is an alteration in the law, to take what advan tage they can of it. Like everything else in the way of gold-fields legislation in New South machinery lor carrying out the leasing system is most miserably defective. It was boen reckoned as fortunate for us that the Commissioner for the Southern gold fields, in which Emu Creek is included, has his headquarters at Young, within 40 miles of Grenfoll ; to hiin all applications for leases havo to be made, and on his dictum depends whether or not those applied for shall bo granted. When I state tho following facts, however, it will be doubted whothor, after all, the fact that the Commissioner's offico beingsituated so tieartous is of much avail. On the 4th I forwarded to the Commissioner atYouugan application for a lease of certain grou...

THE ABYSSINIAN CAPTIVES. [Newspaper Article] — The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser — 2 November 1867

THE ABYSSINIAN CAlH'IViJd. Tho following letter from Mr. Stern, ono of the Abyssinian captives, to bis wife, has. just | boon published;— Magdala Prison, June 10, : 1867. My dear Charlotte. The strange and unparalleled oTents with which my own and my fellow captives' mournful history is bound up, liko the thrilling scenes of a drama, now become moro complicated and terrific as we approach the close of the last act. Cheering hopes and depressing foars, glowing anti pipations and withering disappointments have hitherto alternated during the monotony of our prison existence, ana enshrouded the elasticity or our now and then , drooping spirits. Within the last few days I the shadows which forewarned us of thel pnlpnblo form, and the long expected crash, which will probably bury the abominable tjrant beneath the ruins of his tottsring empire and oxhausted power cannot be far distant. ^ For some timo thn elements of disittTection and rebellion had affected the peasantry of Begemeder, and ...
