Presentation to Mr W. Todd. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 2 October 1908

Presentation to Mr W. Todd. Since the contract for the conveyance of mails from Alexandra to Jamieson has passed from Mr J. Payne to Mr Matthew, the residents along the route have greatly missed the well-known figure of Mr Walter Todd, who, for many years past, had been in charge of the coach. At a well-attended meeting in the Upper Thornton hall, it was decided to recognise in some tangible manner, his many kindnesses during this period. A committee was appointed to canvass the district and funds flowed in freely. Lured out by pleasant weather, and the pros pects of enjoyment, as well as unusual interest in the matter, the Upper Thornton hall was crowded on the occasion,.and representatives from all the surrounding districts were present. Mr .J. O. Wight man, J.P., opened the proceedings by referring to the unfortunate circumstances which necessitated Mr Todd's removal from the coach route. He alluded to the excellent manner in which Mr Todd had discharged his duty during hisnine y...

Southern Province Election -4--t MR. G. T. DICKIE ELECTED. The polling in the above Province took place on Tuesday last. Very little interest was evinced, as will be seen by the votes recorded locally. Me Dickie worked very hard, addres sed many meetings, and made hosts of friends during the campaign. His address in Alexandra was greatly appreciated, and though he did not top the poll his success has been hailed with satisfaction. He is a country member, and the voters of the Province have done well in returning him. The following is the result of the poll: Dickie ... ... 2128 Butler ... ... 1330 Maddock ... ... 794 There are nearly 10,000 voters on the roll, but less than half exercised the right.

Ilgxandra & ?Aa ,$tandald 580 TEMEBE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 2, 1908. Wiiurr the Postal Commission is plodding its weary and expensive way though the evidence on Post and Tele graph expenditure and methods, a smoke social given by the Victorian Postal Sorters' Asssociation last Satur day night, and at which Mr Mauger, Postmaster-General appeared to show us the departmental attitude towards the poor, suffering and patient tele phone user. According to Mr Mauger " For the thousands of calls attended " to within some seconds a word of "commendation was never heard; yet " if a busy man (who got twice as many " calls as he should do for the money "paid) was not answered instantly, ' he shrieked." Football. BRUNSWICK V. ALEXANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 2 October 1908

Football. BRUNSWICK V. ALEXANDRA. BY ONLOOKERn. The Meagies and Red and Black had a gala day on Saturday last, and a large crowd of onlookers assembled to see the runners-up of the Victorian Association do a dash. The " little dears," :.s usual, were in full force, but the absence of the loud-voiced one of the previous Saturday was particularly noticeable. The after noon was fine and a most enjoyable outing resulted. The visit of the Brunswick team had been on the tapis for some time, but it was not finally decided until a few days before, consequently the attendance was not so numerous as would have been the case had more publicity 'been given. For some unaccountable reason there was a want of unanimity among the business neople, two refusing to close their places for a couple ot hours. At any rate those two sterling players (Hubbard and T.. Wood) were not debarred from playing by their respective employers. viz., Messrs. C. J. Christie and Ralph Wil liams. It was thought that the ...

Sad Drowning Fatality. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 9 October 1908

Sad Drowning Fatality. " Much sympathy has been expressed for the parents of young Charles John atone, who met an untimely death at Molesworth, on Saturday morning last. Travellers on the road know the residence of the Johnstone's well, at rear of which a number of lagoons abound. It was in one of these water holes that the body of the boy, who was only 11 years old, was found. It appears that the boy went In search of some geese that had wandered away. He took to a boot that is moored close to the house, and started on his journey. A full view of the lagoon is to be obtained from the road and the several houses in the locality. It. is stated that Johnstone was capable of managing the boat, and was very smart with the pad dles. The first indication of the disaster was the sight of the boat floating about and;no one in.it. .The quiet little village was soon the scene of an excited crowd of people repairing to the lagoon. No time was lost in investigating the suspicions of those who r...

'Ihe annual meeting of the Alexandra Athletic Club was to have been held at Jennings' Sham rock lHotel, on Monhay evening last, but owing to some mis. understanding amongst members, who were not certain as to the night the meeting was to be held, only seven morn. bers put in an appearance. It was decided on the suggestion of President J. W; Leckio that the meeting be adjourned until Tueseny, 13th October, when all memnlhrs and intending members are re quested to be present. The cough that is contracted in winter, and which continues through the spring and sumlmer, nearly always indicates some throat or lung trouble, and should not be neglected. The ordinary cough medicine may soothe the throat, but it has not the power to heal. Recovery is not complete and a second attack is more liable to follow. You cannot get a better medicine for coug'hs of this description than Chamberlain's Coug...
