NEWS AND NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 4 June 1898

NEWS AND NXTES -4-- • A fitting end to a glorious life was that death of Gladstone-a serene passing of a great spirit, and his last word was " Amen !" Amen I The last, long word from his pale lips : Those lips that once did frame great speech To shake our very hearts, and deaths eclipse Comes -o'er his eyes, From human reach He passes. Of the nations each Speaks words of grief and reverently dips Its fluttering flag on towers and stately ships. Amen I indeed, How proudly we recall His strife for liberty, and hear His voice resounding in the vaulted hall For truth and progress, loud and clear I And England sends him cheer on cheer, His wondrous words have magic to enthral His brave humanity embraces all. Amen I So let it be ! ' A man of men, . He toiled devotedly and long ; His insight may have failed him now and then. His great, true heart went never wrong, Womanly was it, and yet .strong. Few lives there are 'twere well to live again, We think of his, and murmur too, "Amenl" The pa...

NEWS AND NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 11 June 1898

NEWS AND NOTES -o M ILDURA PROSPECTS. The following appears- in a recent issue of the Mildura Cultivator, and reviews the prospects of trade in Mildura's staple, products: -" The high reputation which our Sultanas and currants have gained makes it a matter of regret that so small an' area is planted with these vines. The 'Victorian demand for currants is probably twice as large as that for raisins, and the superiority of the local product over the imported article is shown .by the fact that in spite of the prejudice against it, it usually commands a slightly 'higher price. In Sultanas our superiority is unquestioned, and the Mildura Sul tanas top the market at 7 d, while the best imported stand at a farthing per lb less. Sultana growers, at any rate, have no occasion to pull long faces. In regard to dried' apricots and peaches, there is less room for satis faction. The public do not seem to appreciate these. articles. The ordi nary British housewife, whether home or here, is very co...
