NEWS AND NOTES. We are glad to learn that .Mrl?-.Geo Baillieu, who has been confined to his bed fo the last month, from asevere attack of rheumatism, is now progress ing favourably. The reception of Mayor Stoneman and Cr. Admans was a very enthusiastic one. They.arrived by the Chiusan on Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. On landing at the jetty from the launch, the Queenseliff Brass Band received them with welcome music, and a number of .citizens were present. ~GYN ... YNS. A gyn consists of two. cheeks, with cross-bars, a pry pole, a windlass with~ 'levers, a head bolt with shackle, accord-. 'iiig't the pattern, three shoes or trucks 'ior'ie feet, and a tackle. Ti' 16 'foot gyn weighs about 9 cwt, and will raise 76 ewt when furnished with-wrought iron, and 60 ewt with cast, iron fittings. The 18 foot light gyn weighs about 13 ewt, and will raise 7 tons with wrought ironi fittings, and 6 tons with cast iron. The 18 foot heavy gyn is furnished with' wrought iron fittings and is calcu-~: luted to'raise 12 tons. The wrought iron fittings of gyns may be' distiniguished from east' irn by the' difference in the formation oif the?ritche?slid of the windlass .
