BECAUSE AUSTRALIANS ARE HONEST. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

BECAUSE AUSTRALIANS ARE HONEST. It is a fine compliment which The Times (London), perhaps unwittingly, pays to colonial honesty, when it oii'ers to place in the home of anyone who mny apply, a complete set of the Encyclopedia Britannica upon the payment of a single ' guinea, leaving the remainder to be paid in monthly instalments of one - guinea each.- This feature of tho offer made by The Times in our issue to-day is even more surprising than their ability to furnish this library of universal know ledge for less than half tho original price. The publisher's catalogue price was £37, but thooo who order tho work now cro to recoivo.it for 17 guineas only. Furthermore, thoso who elect to secure the^sot on tho instalment plan have only one guinea to ,pay cash down, and tho remainder may be paid at tho rate of ono guinea pea* month after the subscriber hca received tho complete 25_ volumes into his home to ugo and to enjoy while ho is paying for them. A conservative institution such as T...

Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

Commercial Banking Com pany of Sydney. The fact of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney reverting to the payment of ten percent, dividends has awakened the financial world of New South Wales and Australia generally to recognise the restored financial and f-odinrr p.mifidence of the parent colony. The circumstance is one for general congratulation, for the business of a large representative institution like the Commercial is an infallible barometer of tho soundness of trade generally ; and its prosperity may be taken fairly to mean prosperity all along the line of New South Wales business. At the one huudred and fourth half-yearly meeting held last week at the head office, in Sydney, the chairman, Sir Edward Knox, in moving the adoption of tho report, thus referred to the bank's business:—' ' I have the pleasure to in form you that the directors consider that the time has arrived when they feel warranted in recommending the increase of the dividend to 10 per cent, per annum, a st...

' Bob Bell has got a Scotch song now which he sings while wearing a door-mat for bushy and a feather-duster for phili beg. But we never before saw. a Hielander wearing blue Btoclcings with a Stuart tartan kilt. Mr. Bell is a better draw than some of the much vaunted imported vocalists. MAINLY ABOUT PEOPLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

MAINLY ABOUT PEOPLE. | A cable has boen received by Premier Lyne to the effect that Private Jones, of New South Wales, is all right — in South Africa. Mr. R. Gornall, for some time in the composing room of the Evening News, has started a paper at Millthorpe. The ' staff' is evi dently quite a new chum at I journalism, but the printing of the Post would do credit to any city office. Many good stories are told of Lord Hopetoun. On one occasion at a banquet at Ballarat, he made a long and important speech, the reporters being very glad when it came to an end. Just as the press men were commencing to transcribe their notes, Lord Rosehill (A.D.C.) whispered to the Argus man — ' I have a copy of the Governor's speech for you,' handing over a M88. of about 5000 words. The Argus and Age men, only having to add a hundred or so words which did not appear on the MSS., went straight to the telegraph office, and whilst there received a telephone message that the Governor wanted to see them. Thin...

WITHIN THE RING. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

WITHIN THE RING. I ? There was a miserable desertion from duty by many members when I the Capital Punishment Abolition Bill was before the Assembly on Tuesday. Several times there was nearly a count-out, democratic sup porters of reform being conspicuous by their absence — a shortcoming which the liberal people in the com munity will not soon forget. However, Mr. TTnvnen flnp.s nnt. irif.onrl t.n lof. the proposed reform go to perdition, and he will soon give members an other chance to stand or run. Mr. Law is persistent. It is stated that the Railway Commissioners are pushing on the Balmain tram dupli cation scheme with all speed, so the teeming masses of our great western marine suburb will not much longer have reason to complain of ancient means of communication. A bill to stop crimping and other evils affecting the condition of sea men has been introduced by Mr. Sam Smith, member for Pyrmont. Already Mr, Smith has done genuine maritime reform work in Parliament, Mr. J. C. L. Fit...

FEDERAL ELECTION ITEMS. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

FEDERAL ELECTION ITEMS. The fixing of the Federal con stituencies is practically completed, and the average constituency is one of from 10,000 to 12,000 voters. In N.S.W. the constituences out side Sydney and Newcastle are necessarily of enormous areas, and extremely difficult to fight without considerable capital. This was seen five years ago in New South Wales by the Democratic look-out men. Three or four days ago, the same thing was discovered in Victoria. Marvellous ! And what are the re spective sizes of the two colonies? And what of Queensland P The Liberals have need to sit close, right enough. Sir Joseph Abbott and Mr. Frank Suttor are to stand for the Federal Senate, and we prophesy a hard row for each to ho^v There will be no Federal or Protestant Ten business this time, for most likely Cardinal Moran will stay at home. Mr. Edward Terry is going to have a tussle for the prize, and is of course booked to ride 'Indepen dent ' over the course. It is said the Labour Party will...

Mines and Mine Workers. [Newspaper Article] — The Elector — 28 July 1900

Mines and Mine Workers. A return just issued shows that on the 30th of last month there were 7271 men employed on the mines and connected works at Broken Hill, and there were also 2438 men employed by the same companies at -outside works, making a total of nearly 10,000 persons working for tho Barrier mining companies, of whom, at the outside, one-sixth are members of the Amalgamated Miners' Association or other Trades' Unions. It is about time, perhaps, that the local self-styled ' labor ' organ, and those who are compelled to find the money to rjin it, awakened to the fact that there is something radically wrong somewhere. The men are not all raving lunatics ; they know they are living and working under condi tions which would not be tolerated in any other part of the world ; they know that divided they are helpless ; that capitalistic greed reigns a triumphant king ; and that they have not a solitary friend amongst them to plead their cause or to fight their battle ; that even at...
