Cheap Silk Swindle. Edwin Percy Liddle, who has been convicted on a charge of obtaining money by means of false pretences, was, called up for sentence before Judge Murray at the. Sydney Quarter Sessions on Monday week last Evi dence was given at the trial to the effect that Liddle, by representing, in an advertisement published throughout the Commonwealth, with the exception of New South Wales, that he 'would sell ten yards of silk for 2/6, obtained a large number of. postal notes, money orders and' stamps, ■ but it was maintained that he Jid- not intend to out his part of the agreement. Mr. Teece, who appeared for Liddle, >asked that, he be dealt with as a first offender, but Judge Murray. said that he could not take that "course, -for ..it would bring .ih.e administration of criminal law into contempt. State Politics. On Thursday evening last Mr. A. Biggar and Mr. D. C. Morrison, who are offering themselves for selection, addressed a large gathering of ladies and gentlemen in the Pub'ic Hall, Nathalia. - Cr. ]. H. Tuckett, the president of th local branch of the People's Parly, presided. The chairman explained that the meeting was called by the. People's Party and the A.W.N. League to litar the views of those genilemen who had sent in their "names for selection as a candidate to contest the Goulburn Valhyelectorate when Mr. Graham-retired. Mr. Biggaf-and Mr. Morrison ad dressed the meeting in the order named, traversing practically the same subjects of general politics. They bath claimed ..Jo be . Liberals and opposed to the socialistic policy of the Labor party. The meeting ' listened quietly to the addresses and at the close of the speakers' remarks the usual votes of thanks were passed.

Construction of Main Roads. The M.nister ot Public Works (Mr. Hagelthorn) in referring to the work of the Country Roads Board said lecently that he was exceedingly gratified to iearn from the members of the board that the objections en tertained by many councillors against the operation of the. act were being steadily overome. Councillors when appealed to on the broard question of the necessity of having the main roads put in proper order, were., jn. mariy cases quite prepared to make sacrifices so tar as purely local roads were concerned. It was quite clear that there was little possibility of obtaining the proper construction of national roads whilst municipal councils were allowed to spend their own money in their own way, but whilst the excellent work done by the councils in the past was appreci ated, it was now felt that with the en-operation of the board, much effective work would be done.
