reader opinion on discipline by Michael Eric Wimms Sixth Semester, MIS Control is that omnipresent point of equilibrium each of us seeks to attain at some point in our lives. We all want and need this self-control, because we know the more control we have over our own lives the more fulfilled we will be as individuals. The simple fact of control can be seen in the simple and uncomplicated world of a child. Children without some sort of guidance or control over their lives will run wild, and eventually they will desire some sense of purpose. This sense of purpose will more than likely come in the form of parental direction. Since adults are only older forms of children we too seek control, but more in the form of discipline. Discipline is internally driven. It is something that is within each of us and makes us what we are. I have been taught and now come to believe, that the mind is like a fortress of wonders; once we have learned to tap its resources there are not many obstac...

editorial opinion - The word is out that some organizations on campus are considering a fundraiser in the form of a frightful flick. I'm sure X-rated movies are screened in colleges across the nation. But Behrend does not have to be one of them. Let's think of Behrend's reputation The association of showing porn flicks would really conjure nice connotations for the college. Some people argue that Xrated movies really rake in the cash, but so do Hitchcock and "Ghostbusters". There is a multitude of alternative entertainment to keep students amused. My biggest problem with the screening of this flick is the blatent exploitation of women across the screen. Not only is it offensive, but tasteless and unnecessary on a college campus. How about the content of these films. Can you really consider this quality entertainment? Phil Donahue informed me that X-rated movies have no plot, poor acting and bad filming. If you need to see tastless trash for fun, go down to Cinema 18 at 1...

Air bands show their stuff Lip-syncing to a song is a pastime that is listed in the same category as drinking directly out of the milk carton-you only do it when no one is around. Some of the best lip-syncing takes place in America's bedrooms where mockscreaming into a hairbrush in front of a mirror is a common occurance. People even lip-sync in the shower if they can get away with it. And there is always the "wait-til-your-home-alone" method, best executed by Tom Cruise in Risky Business. On Thursday, Nov. 14, a select number of Behrend students came out of the lip-syncing closet to perform at the 1st annual Air Band Contest sponsored by the Student Programming Council. Attendance was outstanding. SPC President, Kim Neely, estimated that there were over 200 people in the Gorge. It was the most successful activity to date. The first place band was "The Time" comprised of, Leon Corbin, Ed Williams, Charles Wall, Rob Farmer, Ron Williams and Wendell. "The Time" won a prize to ...

C««_aam T«ill/_i Arnold at home _5Cre@n I OIK: as "Commando by T. McGee Collegian Contributing Writer I',m convinced. Arnold Schwarzeneger actually has the ability to speak coherent sentences with a hint of emotional activity. I didn't think it was possible but Arnolds new film, "Commando", dispels the old Schwarzeneger image of an ironbodied idiot. The old Mr. Universe plays a retired commando who lives in the mountains with his young daughter. The pair is assaulted by a group of power hungry terrorists and the young girl is kidnapped with the promise that she will be returned if Arnie carries out the assasination of a third world politician. Needless to say, our boy is not pleased. After disposing of the nasties assigned to make sure he does his job, Mr. Muscle begins a non-stop rampage during which he kills bad guys with everything from rocket launchers to machete blades. The final showdown is especially violent, though not offensive since director Mark Lester keeps us fe...
