•' Tun Kpfkct or Railways on the material prosperity of a State is visible in the recent census returns of Illinois. Beforu the construction of railways was commenced then, the progress of uvltlement was comparitively slow. The tide of emigration hod acquired an impetus in other directions, and IMinoU seemed to struggle along with a speed far l>ehind that of kouh- newer States. But with the construction of an oxtended system of railways in the State, a wonderful awakening uf enterprise seems to have oncurred. Tobacco Pahicki) is I-iiAD I'DisoN-nn.—It scouis from n,t!v . ut medical n-Hian-hen (see Amertcun Journal of Mfdtcal Science for January, 1K40) that tlw moisture contained in Tobacco will oxydizc thu lead with which it remains long in contact, forming •v.pcpuliar poisonous salt. Tho tobacco becomes covered with a layer of acetate, carbonate, chloride, und sulphate of lead, amounting to from six to thirty grains in a half |wund. Tho presence of lead in tobacco is detected by burning the tobacco in a crucible, treating tho ashes rcsultiug with hydrochlorio n.ciu°, then evaporating the mixture, and treating tho redcsolvcd _ruudum with ^ho ionide of potasium, sulpliato of soda and sulphurated hydrogen. '
