PENNSYLVANIA RAILROADS. The annual report concerning tho rail roads of this State, in 1803, shows such remarkable prosperity as to deserve notice. The expenses of the roads during the year were §20,002,804 56. In the same time the receipts were §40, 523 , 571 45 , which leaves a profit of §19, 920 ,706 89, or a sum ve r y nearly equal to the whole annuil expense. During the same period the passenger railways earned $1 , 813 , 218 10 , and expended $1 , 267 , 044 02 , which leaves them a profit of § 540 ,173 58. There was a time, not very distant, when the entire revenue of. the United States Government did not equal that of the railroads of the single State of Pennsy lvania in the year 1863. It was a year of war too , when the energies and the resources of the' people might he supposed to be wholly engrossed in military matters. \ But industry of every kind has so flourished that our great carrying companies have been taxed to the utmost with business, and their profits have bee...
