The meeting of the general assembly of the state is an event eminently calculated to awaken interest and solicitude in the public mind. Tin most improvident usu was maile of their credit, discounts were unguardedly made, accommodations imprudently granted, and their issues extended, not only beyond all the bounds of moderation nnd prudence, but greatly beyond their ability to redeem them. The inevitable consequence of this impolitic and extravagant course, was a reort for the second time to a suspension of specie payments. The disregard of principle and faithlessness manifested by thin act should have deprived them at once of all legislative support. Hut at thi" time they had entwined themselves almost indissolubly around the interests of the country. Every department of business and trade was entirely at their mercy, the people and 8tat were completely within their grasp. The pecuniary embarrassment and distress licit would have been occasioned by the sudden withdrawal of their paper from circulation was truly alarming.
