ToUde 1914—ABumper Overland Year FOU R years ago the Overland passed into the hands of its present owners . During this same time many other automobile manufacturers have come and gone—flared up and out . But our progress has not only been phenomenal , but strong and healthy . Each year our sales have increased by millions . In the last four years we have accomplished more , done a target business and given the farmer more car for less money than any other automobile manufacturer in the world . All this is a matter of record . This is going to be our banner year . We are producing 50 , 000 cars , and tho largest portion of this great output is go * ¦ ing to the American fa...

The New Year ' s Message [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

The New Year s Message By Frank Walcott Hutt . Wherever the New Year story Is told , in the hut or hall , 1 think that the crowning glory It shareth the most of all , Is heard in the song of the New Year bell That rings to the world , I wish you well . All hail ! Twos the same in ages , And ages of by-gone years ; All hail ! How it clears the pages Of many a book of tears . The gospel old of the New Year bell Calls out to us all , I wish you well . Oh , voices rise from the morrow And join with the voices past , That cheer the faces of sorrow , And sing of the joys that last . And every heart is a New Year bell That chimes with the voices , I wish you well .

J * Jt J * January Jottings [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

J * Jt J * January Jottings Toot for the Institute . Gather the eggs several times daily . Write for incubator and seed catalogues . Make a final selection of the seed corn . Keep the horses conditioned for spring work . Keep the stock out of the young alfalfa . Tramping may kill it . Attend the agricultural extension school if it comes your way . Clean up the woodlot ; cut up the dead and fallen timber ; burn the brush . When the water runs off , it is a good time to go out and plan tile drainage . The man who learns to farm better , usually learns to increase his profits also . Better and more convenient poultry houses would benefit profits on many farms . Of course , it is unpleasant to dig fodder out of the snow . Shucks ! Why fuss ? And whose fault is it anyway ? Have the sow in a warm place if she is due to farrow , with not too much straw and a railing next to the wall so she cannot lie on the little pigs . Do you know what your profits were for 1913 ? If not , better turn ov...

Shot and Shell It is better to suffer than to sin . * * * Bad habits are thistles in the heart * * * Sin is not always repulsive at first sight . * , * * It is as wicked not to do right as it is to do wrong . * * * There are men who have a creed a rod long who do business with a short yard stick . * * * Labor troubles are often caused by men who are trying to make a living without work . * * * Some men are always asleep when a golden opportunity knocks at the door of their house .

Jl jl 4 All for Woman [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

Jl jl 4 All for Woman THE PRESIDENT was non-committal when the suffragettes besieged the White House and demanded of him a sign . They asked for official support of their cause . The best friends of the President must admit that he diplomatically side-stepped the issue , but the administration is not side-stepping its duty toward womanhood , nor is it indifferent to their well being . There are other ways of befriending them than by thrusting them into the gruelling strife of public life . The President s wife has given much of her time to visitation in the Government offices where many women are employed . She has been investigating their working conditions and is lending her influence for their improvement . She and her daughters have also been investigating the housing conditions in the squalid parts of Washington . The houses of the poor , especially the poor negroes , are built in the alleys . Sanitation is neglected . It occurs to the Presidents family that the condition of th...

Jl Jl Jl The Free Seed Graft [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

Jl Jl Jl The Free Seed Graft THE CONGRESSMEN who have thought to make themselves solid with their rural constituency by distributing under post office frank a nickel s worth of garden seed every year will be denied this privilege if the brave resolution which the better element of our representatives has formed , does not fail before it becomes a law . Instead of spending one or two- hundred thousand dollars a year in distributing radish , onion , carrot and beet seeds together with various other varieties , which any farmer could grow , the proposition is up to devote this same appropriation for the distribution of new varieties of grain and grass , especially those which have been secured in parts of the world where growing conditions are similar to those of the unfavorable sections of the United States . There are millions of acres of so-called dry land , which are as yet practically unproductive except for short grass pasture , which may become very valuable if the so-called dry...

Jo Ji Ji The Country Church [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

Jo Ji Ji The Country Church A FARM COMMUNITY that is without the influence of the church has already started on its backward course toward barbarism , but the country church presents a problem that is a little perplexing . The population is not usually sufficient to support a minister unless he has other sources of income . An Alabama congregation has devised a plan which may prove suggestive . They secured ten acresof land , one acre of which was reserved for a building site and the remaining nine acres was set out in orchard . There will be truck farming on an intensive scale between the trees while they are yet small . Each member of the congregation will be invited to contribute at least one day s work toward the care of the crops and the proceeds of their sale will go into the church treasury . It occurs to us that if the country minister , on his graduation from the theological seminary , could take a year postgraduate study in an agricultural college and qualify himself to be...

Meat Shortage and Poultry [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 January 1914

Meat Shortage and Poultry THIS NUMBER of BETTER FARMING is devoted largely to our poultry interests . Poultry is considered usually as a side line , and a small side line to general farming , but a side line which in one year , and that only two years ago , produced $ 750 ,- 000 , 000 , is not so small as to be sneezed at . During the past ten years the population of this country increased about 20 per cent while the supply of meat producing animals actually decreased or remained stationary . The Western stock country is being occupied by those engaged in mixed farming , where live stock unfortunately occupies a minor place , but there is not a farm in the country where the poul try produced could not be doubled or trebled . If we are too stingy to divide with our wives and daughters our income from milk and grain , let us in all decency give them a little better show to make some pocket money out of their poultry . Can t we give them at least the price of a good incubator so that t...
