i « M » ti » ¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦»¦»»»»» Poultry j mum » m »» POULTRY TOPICS FOR JULY . Mr . H . H : . Fike , Worth , III ., writes The Farm Home : The hatching-season is now over . Chicks hatched after August 1 do not pay , and it Is better policy to take proper . care of the flock than to try to hatch late chicks . Do not make the mistake of trying to feed the . older and younger chicks together . Scatter the flocks so as to have the younger ones by themselves , thus giving each age proper attention at this critical time that is necessary to develop strong , vigorous birds . To do this you must have ; plenty of range . The poultry . business , is receiving more and better attention each year , and good care means success . Twenty years ago it was predicted that every one would soon have fine bred poultry , and then , it would be impossible to sell the stock and eggs at a profit . Every careful breeder of pure bred fowls today will tell you he has demand for every good bird he can raise , and ...

The four pigs that we have selected lor the sale at Springfield are an extra good lot . The yearling boar is what we call a great hog in all that goes to make up a good sire . He has the right kind of head and hams , and excels in bone and has good feet . He is bound to do some breeder a lot of good . The other boar was farrowed in October , 1899 , and has all the points of a prize winner and we believe will make a great fellow for the show ring . He will go into the show ring with style and finish on good feet , and if he does not win , it will take a great boar to defeat him . Parties desiring to complete a first class show herd will not be slow to bid on him . The two yearling sows are bred for October farrow . They are typical Berkshires , and well matched with the boars for style , quality and finish of the up-to-date Berksh...

j Southdown Sheep [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 July 1900
j Southdown Sheep FLOCK NOTES . Mr . Geo . T . Stearns , Marion , N . Y ., writes : My Southdowns are doing very well , and sales have been good ; have a fine lot of lambs . iWe have many inquiries as to where to get Southdowns . All of these are referred to Where to Buy Southdowns on this page of The Farm Home . The breeders whose names appear in this list are reliable and have excellent sheep . This list might well be extended by the addition of the names of many other breeders . At the great Paris Exposition , the grand prize of honor was awarded to the Southdowns as the best foreign sheep . The pen winning this high prize consisted of two rams , one of them of proved excellence as a sire , and the other a yearling , and two pens of ewes , one of them yearlings bred and reared by exhibitor . Thus the Southdowns continue to stand at the head . In this issue we present the picture of the Southdown ram , Warren Ellis 7 10274 , bred by John Hobart Warren , afterwards owned in Canada ...

Noble King read the following paper at the McLean County Farmers Institute : Among the various societies organized by women of the present day , none , perhaps , touch life on so many sides as those which seek to Investigate and to correct the errors in the ¦ existing conditions of home life . It has been said that the only industry left entirely to the management of ; women is the one that has made the least progress in the last two hundred . years . Happily for us this uncomplimentary statement is losing its force since thoughtful women of old and young , of all conditions and of all classes are beginning to realize their personal responsibility in the matter of good living , and by good living we mean not only the food that we eat and the air that we breathe , but also the formative influences that ten...
