HOME AND FIRESIDE Conducted by Mrs . Jessie Whitsitt M RS . WHITSITT wants the readers of the Home and Fireside to write her of the perplexities you find in your home life on the farm , and she also wants short articles for publication . She takes a close , personal interest in each one of her correspondents , and will be pleased to exchange help , counsel and encouragement . If you desire a reply by mail , kindly enclose a stamp . Address Mrs . Jessie Whitsitt , Farm Press , Chicago , 111 . To be contented on the farm is the greatest blessing that can fall to the lot of our farming people . Whenever the people on the farm get the idea that living in the city or small town is one continuous holiday , and their chief end and aim of life is to move to the place where they will have plenty of pleasure and leisure , then they part company forever with happiness . They become restless , they talk over their hard lot with their neighbors , who also find farm work irksome , and as it only ...

plate JsialaTffgfe ! asaiaMa WaHaiai BiaiaaJaTaiSMH I Current Events SmlHlKlKlHffl HiBraiKiHHrKiitlHtoSKlKtotolKtaiSiHlHfi THE injustice of express monopoly is becoming more apparent with every investigation . The business is conducted on the principle of collecting every cent that the traffic will stand . There is no competition , because the different express companies all work together . It is in reality one immense trust , thoroughly organized , with offices in every town in the country . There is only one class of freight that is regulated , and that is the carriage of second class postal matter . The postoffice department will carry it for one cent per pound and the express companies , it seems , can afford to underbid them . It so happens that a bundle of newspapers will be carried by an express company several hundred miles for three-fourths cent per pound , while in the same car other express packages going the same distance will be charged ten cents per pound . The only re...

H Dairy and Live Stock 1 [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 July 1907

H Dairy and Live Stock 1 THE farmer who manufactures butter and feeds warm skim milk direct from the separator to calves and pigs is selling off very little soil fertility . His farm must necessarily improve every year , which in itself is no small item of profit . In order to make the calf grow up into a valuable cow it must have a great deal of attention during the growing period . The selection of feed , the amount and the time and manner of feeding has more to do with its milking qualities in after life than the breeding . Of course we aU know that breeding is valuable , but breed alone wont tell the whole story . A rule with a good many dairymen , especially those living near large cities where milk is especially profitable , is to pay no attention to the beef value of a cow . Their idea is that dairy cows are not intended to produce beef , that they can get enough more milk from a good dairy cow so that the value of the carcass is no consideration to them whatever . \ The most...
