ROMANCE OF REAL LIFE There was a fine o01 gt-neral once who, hav ing spent most of his life in the field of Mars, knew very little about the camp of Cupid. -C I was one of those rough and honest spirits often met with in his gallant profession; innocent as an infant of almhost everything save high integrity and inldomitnble bravery. IHe wis nearly fifty years old, and his tolls were over when master Dan brought hint acquainted with a widow Wadinatl, in whose eye he began to detect something that made him feel uneasy. _ Cý c crdidnrtý Bmcrvat. IIOUSEHOLD RULE. If Simon Silcox prided himself more on one point than another, it was in the manuagemnent of his household. From the commneneement of his matrimonial life he had endeavored to ren. doer his will absolute; mad he so far succeeded at last, that he satisfied himself that his aim was accomplished. Occasionally, it was true, that symptoms of rebellion would manifest themselves, but these he promptly checked, and his wife, after several years of feeble resis tance in the earlier period of her marriage, quietly settled down beneath his Iron rule, part ly for the sake of peace, and more particular. ly because she could not help it. .Silcox was a prosperous trader, and enjoyed a sufficient competence to render them com fortable, it wordly possessions have the power to produce that happy state. Aside from his imperious disposition, which did not conline Itself to the nimits of his own household. lihe was altogether an agreeable nian anl a good neighb...

tic dithRcnu ntcmocxrt. A YANKEE STORY. The funny columns in the English papers de rive more of their " stun for smiles" fromt jour nials in this country, than from any other source. We find in one of them this ludicrous anecdote of the " bewitched clock." About half past eleven o'clock on Sundly night, a humuan leg, enveloped in blue broad cloth, might have been seen entering Deacon Cephas Iarberry's kitchen window. The leg was followed, finally by the entire person of a live Yankee, attired in his Sunday-go-to-meet in clothes. It was, in short, Joe Mayweed, who thus hurglarously won his way into the Deacon's kitchen. " Wonder how much the old deacon made by orderin' mle not to darken his door uaxnin ?' soliloquized 1he young gentleman. " PrOnis ed him I wouldn't, but I didn't say nothin' about winders. Winders is as good as doors, ef there nint no nails to tear your trowsers onto. Wonder ilf S.lly'll come down. Tile critter .promised me. I'm affeered to move about here, 'cause I m...
