[FOR THE RECORD-UNIO.N.] SET IN A SILVER SEA ! A ROMANCE BY B. L. FARJEON, AUTHOR OP " BLADE O 1 GRASS," " BKEAD AND CHEESE AND KISSES," " JOSHUA MAKV EL " KING OF NO-LAND," " THE BELLS OF PENRAVEN," ETC. CHAPTER XVII. KANr'3 EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD. "Mauvain being gone, I was my own master ; no person had any claim in me. I could wander where I pleased, and could •hoose my own mode of life. My foretaste of the world's ways and of the ways of men had not been pleasant, but I was a free man now, and might meet with a bet ter kind of justice. " Wondering a little what had become of my mother, whom I had not seen for many months, I made my way back to the forest in which my early life had been passed. I went first to the hut ; it was deserted. I sought her then, and found her in Mauvain's fine hou3e. She was alone ; no person but herself was within hail. She asked me for news of Mauvain, and I told her of his peril and escape. " 'It was noble of him to trust you,' she said. "'He truste...

THE DAILY RECORD-UNION. SATURDAY ................ .MAY 8. 11-80. THE WEEKLY ONION. The Weekly Uxios issued this morcing is on 3of the most valuable papers published on the conti nent. It is not necessary now to refer to its varied departments and to the skill and labor applied to each, nor to the rare managerial ability displayed in the conduct of the paper— these speak for them selves, and give evidence in every column of read ing matter pr< pared or selected. As a news journal we desire just now to present its claims, and while it is complete in all departments of news, the chief claim is that it cives news oftener and treshcr than any other weekly. Thi« is bo because it is iwued in gemi- weekly parts, which gives the reader the current fact and opinion of the day long before the old-time weekly is issued. Each semi wetkly part consists of eight i ages, making a total of sixteen pages per week, and all sent for $2 per year, post paid. NEWS OF THE MORNING. Is New York yesterday ...

Questions pertinent u» this department will be answered in this column.] Ventilating Bedrooms. In some houses it is not difficult to bring a four-inch wooden tube through the whole length of a partition from the top to the bottom floor of a house, and to let a sup ly of air enter that tube at the upper part, and distribute air to every room that lies in its course. On rising in the morning the bedroom windows should be opened at the top and bottom equally, and, except when the weather U very wet, they should remain open until the sun begins to go j down. It is a bad practice to leave the windows open late in the day, and this es pecially in the winter. The air becomes charged with damp, and a damp air is really as dangerous, if n...

THE DAILY RECORD-UNION. SAN FRANCISCO MARKET REVIEW. [KBrORTID FOR TIIK BACRAMKKTO DAILY KKCORD-GSION.] Sas Frascisco, May 6, 1830. There is no question about there being a gradual &ad sure growth of confidence in business circles. There is no manifest increase in the volume of busi ness, nevertheless the better feeling is very strong. The Herald says that " a bright day is soon to dawn upon the Pacific coast. Heretofore experience has shown that a 'flood year' in Cdifornia is always productive of good results. The Grain yield is . usually abundant ; the various mines produce liber ally of the precious metal*; the Wool clip good ; the Wine product liberal, while Hay, Feed, Grains and all the leaser crops yield freely of their abun dance. This, then, is the foundation upon which we, the people of California, rely, and upon which ire base our hopes for the near future. Money is plentiful. Interest rites rule lower than ever be fore, when based on srilt-edged securities. Produc tiv...
