This befog the cat a very fair conception of the prospects for lumber for the coming season cm be had. In the first place, the stock of lumber on hand January 1st. 1878, is much below that on hand at the beginning of 1S77. A detailed statement of the lumber in stock at the numerous markets of the Missis sippi valley shows that at the opening of last year there was a total 599.459,000 leet on hand, while o.i January 1st, this year, the amount was 464,659.700 feet, showing a falling oft' in the amount in stock ot 234,S05,240 feet. In the princi pal lumber markets ot the country out side of the Mississippi valley, the state ment shows on hand Januaiy lst, 1877, a total of 1.7J 1,600.778 feet and at the commencement of 1S7S a total of 1,695, 404,016 feet, showing a decre...
