Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you during this coming year of 1991! As we close the year of 1990 and launch into the new year of 1991, the members of Contemplative Ministries and myself wish to extend to you and your loved ones a most blessed coming year. We wish to thank you for your support of our humble ministry, especially through your love offerings in subscribing to INSCAPE. All of us have very much to thank God for as we look over the past year. How good God is and how much he loves us and manifests his love in the miracles of the past 365 days and the wonders of each moment of those days! Humbly we accept the gift of anew year, so full of exciting promises and expectations. Will you share with me this important teaching of how Jesus frees us, heals us, and makes us whole and, therefore, a bit more holy in the process as we cry out to him? We rejoice t...

JESUS FREES US CAPTIVES [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

JESUS FREES US CAPTIVES You and I have been following with great concern and now somewhat joy at seeing the thousands of hostages in Kuwait and Iraq being set free. We have seen, especially our fellow Americans, returning home to rejoice with their loved ones at being liberated from their confining captivity. We have read about their fears, physical and mental sufferings in their hostage state. We human beings are bom into a certain captivity. Holy Scripture presents us human beings as created according to God's own image (Gn. 1:26-27). We alone, unlike all other created, material beings, stand uniquely as free agents in communication with God, as he freely shares his very own life with us. God's gift of himself is a process of self-giving to us human beings as we are to work to fashion a world in loving obedience to our heavenly Father’s wishes. But sin entered into the hearts of our first parents and has been passed down to us in a selfcentered bondage. When Jesus began his public...

FREEDOM AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

FREEDOM AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD Jesus rarely spoke about freedom as such. His role was to be the freeing power of God's love come among us. He preached the goodness about the in-breaking of the Father's love as synonymous with his very person. He knew one did not reach freedom by hearing a conference or sermon about it. People became free by accepting Jesus and his Spirit of love that would make them free in the experience that they now really belonged to God's family as children of God, "heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ" (Rm. 8:15). We know from our own personal experience that we are not consistently joyful persons. We are filled with anxieties and fears. We are held captive to our worldly ego consciousness that stands in judgment upon all whom we meet. In prayer we feel confident that we can bargain with God or, by insisting vehemently over and over, that we can change his mind and that he will do whatever we see as most important in our lives for our happiness. In a word, we...

JESUS LIBERATES US [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

JESUS LIBERATES US Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God, of the Father's great love for his children. But he came also to actualize this love of God for us by being a perfect image in human form of the passionate love that the Father has always for us through his same Spirit of love. The good news that made the captives free to enter into the Kingdom of God and to be liberated from their anxieties and fears was not only that God is a loving Father of infinite mercy, forgiving each person of their sins, bringing healing love to the lonely and desolate, and hope to the hopeless. Moreover, the "in-breaking" of God's energies of love into our human lives was being at that moment effected by this man, Jesus of Nazareth. It was not so much the words that he preached that burst the bonds that held the human race in slavery, but it was he himself, the Word of God, that was the liberating power if anyone would yield themselves to his very person. If you make my word your home you will ind...

FREEDOM BY ENLIGHTENMENT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

FREEDOM BY ENLIGHTENMENT But this enlightenment to move away from our worldly ego consciousness to find our true nature in God as Absolute Being, the source and goal of all our striving, could only come from God's Spirit by way of anew birth. And yet how we squirm, resist, run away from God's call by closing our spiritual ears and putting off this vital conversion! The little ones who, like children, open themselves to receive God's Word, Jesus Christ, would enter into the Kingdom, which for Jesus was the same as becoming truly free. Thus, although Jesus rarely spoke of freedom, still it was to free us that he came. He brought no army to liberate us from the enemy that held us captive. His Father could have given him "more than twelve legions of angels" (Mt. 26:53). But he would use no ruse, no violence or worldly force. He himself was the sole Liberator pitted against the enemy of darkness that holds minds in fear.

JESUS IS THE WAY. THE TRUTH. AND THE LIFE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

JESUS IS THE WAY. THE TRUTH. AND THE LIFE Jesus entered into our sinful world like us in all things, save sin (Heb. 4:15). He saw human beings like ourselves, enslaved to sin and death and "to the elemental principles of this world" (Ga. 4:3). His heart, that was a heart "nearest to the Father's heart" (Jn. 1:18), went out to the broken ones who were like sheep without a shepherd (Mt. 9:36). When he looked upon the maimed, the blind, the lepers and the paralytics, the epileptics and the possessed, the sinner bound by hatred for others, by lust and pride, he, as it were, could not but be compassionate, full of mercy and loving as his Father is. Faced with the power of darkness and sin and death covering the faces of human beings, Jesus burned with zeal to bring the light of God's love to destroy the effects of sin. Jesus came to free the whole human person, body, soul, and spirit, in all our relationships to God, to each other, to the material world around us. He came to give us life...

BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED Jesus came to image the Father's love, not only in each personal encounter with each individual, sick person whom he healed when there was faith offered to him but, above all, in his final hour of kenosis or complete self-emptying. It was on the cross that Jesus speaks God's Word of total love for us human beings. Emptied not only of all human dignity but of the very last drops of water and blood, Jesus by that act has entered into an eternal act of always now loving us with such passionate madness unto death. If Paul could experience the inner freedom that came from his constant realization that Jesus "loved me and sacrificed himself for my sake" (Ga. 2:20), so we can at every moment experience a freeing from sin and loneliness, fear and anxiety, as we reflect upon God's freeing Word. Our daily life shows us the great need we have for the liberation that Jesus comes to bring us. We are being offered by God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit the gift of an...

JESUS FREES US FROM SELF-CENTERED NESS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

JESUS FREES US FROM SELF-CENTERED NESS In such a state we desperately seek to be loved by God and neighbor. Yet our false ego resorts to power and attack in order to retain the original perception of our independence from all others. In the words of the gin-soaked lawyer in Albert Camus' The Fall: Fortunately, I arrived! lam the end and the beginning; I announce the law. In short, I am a judge-penitent... Ah, mon ami, do you know what a solitary creature is like as he wanders in big cities? Jesus comes as God's great love manifested. He lives within us with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He wishes to free us from the isolation into which sin has cast us. With Paul we confess that sin in our members has control over us. We are held in inner captivity. We are the prisoner, the hostage, but we are also the jailer! We hold the key to open the door, yet we keep using other keys but the one true Kev. Jesus Christ, who alone can set us free. Wretches that we are, we can be saved only by G...

FREE TO LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

FREE TO LOVE The measurement of how free we have become by accepting the love of God as manifested by Jesus Christ in his Spirit must be based on our free ability to take our beautiful self and offer it as free gift, unconditional, to another, to both God and neighbor. When Jesus frees us from sin and gives us his Spirit who brings us into true freedom (1 Cor. 3:18) we become aware through the Spirit's faith, hope, and love that we are truly God's loving and beautiful children. It now is our honor and dignity to love and obediently serve God. No longer are we bound to serve our selfish interest or to think of ourselves but, as St. Paul tells us, like Jesus we are to lovingly serve our weak neighbors. "Christ did not think of himself (Rm. 15:3). In the cross of Christ freedom is revealed as a gift. The Christian under the Spirit of Jesus understands that slavery to egoism is destroyed by Jesus' great personal love for each of us individually. And true freedom is now revealed as God's...

A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST JESUS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST JESUS In Christ we are formed into a "new creation" (2 Cos. 5:17). The old creation is now dead and we are alive to Christ, who calls us to service in reconciling the whole world to the Father (2 Cos. 5:18-19). Christ's life within us that begins as an embryo in Baptism is to grow as we cooperate with Christ to live as free children of God, progressing "to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself" (Ep. 4:13).

GROWTH THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1991

GROWTH THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT Christ is to be the center of all our thoughts and actions. Everything in us, the values that we choose to live and act by, must be brought under obedience to Christ Jesus (2 Cos. 10:5). We are to walk in anew life with Jesus (Rm. 6:4). Jesus frees us from everything that is an obstacle to the life of Christ within us through the continued action of the Spirit. This Spirit has created the new life in Christ within us. But it becomes sanctifying grace only when we cooperate with the created grace of the Spirit toward oneness in thought, word, and deed with Christ. The Spirit develops this life and brings it to its fullness as we yield to the Spirit guiding us. "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Cos. 3:17). Thus the truly free life of Christians is guided by a turning within to the core of our being to find the Trinity as the Center of Being and of life for us in order to become enlightened in each decision by the wisdom of the Spirit...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 February 1991

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! Lent this year begins on February 13. Lent is a memorial of God's Spirit driving Jesus into the desert to fast and pray in order to discover the Father's presence deep inside of his heart, the deepest layers of his consciousness and unconscious, and to surrender himself totally in return love to the Father. This Lent we can see that amidst so much international turmoil of war among nations, the Spirit wishes to lead us also into the desen of our heans to confront the destructive powers which kill or at least are obstacles to the divine life indwelling us. As we live out the last decade of the 20th century, shall we make the years of the 1990s a iournev into our heart? This is the topic chosen for this month's teaching. It is most important because at the root of so many of our personal problems and the crises throughout the...
