Thirteen day*laterfromlke «;. State*. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 7 June 1849

Thirteen days later from the U. States. By the Ocean steamer Panama Captain Bailey, which arrived in this port on Monday morning last, we have dates from New York city up to the 19th April. The Panama left Panama on the 18th May, and arrived in this harbor early on Monday morning, June 4, thus making the passage in about 17 days. The Panama brought 290 passengers, among whom are the Hon. T. Butler King of Georgia, and Mrs. Fremont of Washington. She brings a very large mail, — the largest ever received in this place — but the intelligence is only a duplicate of that by the Edith from Mazatlan, which we published last week. The excitement relative to the gold mines was subsiding, but emigration was still going steadily forward. By a compilation prepared in the New York Tribune office, it appears that the whole number of passengers sailed from the United States for California, from December 7, 1848, to April 17, 1849, was as follows: From New York, 8,095 " Boston, 2,624 " Philadelphia...

LtttfMt from Kurope. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 7 June 1849

Latest from Europe. England — ParIiamentary Doings. — Parliament adjourned for the Easter recess and met again on the 6th April. The two main objects which have divided its attention have been the Navigation bill and the Rate-in-Aid bill for Ireland, which latter has branched out into a general debate on the policy to be pursued toward that country. It will be seen that some important modifications have been made in the Navigation bill. The revenue returns for the financial years and quarter ending on the 5th inst. show a continuous though not a very great improvement in the Customs revenue. There is an increase of £1,169,554 as compared with the previous year. In the Excise Department there is an increase of £569,632. In all the branches of the ordinary revenue there is a decrease, the most considerable item being one of £719,581 upon stamps. The excess of increase over decrease of the total revenue of the year is £867,289. FRANCE — A Tory View of French Affairs. — With some except...

ALTA CALIFORNIA. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 7 June 1849

ALTA CALIFORNIA. SAN FRANCISCO, SATURDAY JUNE 7, 1849 From the Sandwich Islands. — By the ship James Monroe, which arrived on the 2d inst., we have received files of the Polynesian up to May 5. There is nothing important. The Hawaiian legislature assembled at Maunakilika on the 30th April, and adjourned without transacting uny business to meet again in April 1850, if not sooner assembled by a proclamation of the King. The Polynesian is still filled with official advertisements of persons about to leave the kingdom for California. Hon. Anthony Ten Eyck, came passenger in the James Monroe. He is said to be on his way to the U. States. We learn verbally that the publication of the Sandwich Island News has been suspended. Consequently the troubled political waters have subsided. Funny: — The Botany Bay of California. — At a trial of a Californian, a few days since, before the 2d Alcalde of the Pueblo de San Jose, for whipping his wife he was found guilty, and sentenced to be banished to...
