"Babel In The Wootli." [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 16 April 1885
"Babel In The Wootli." 1 »bab Editok akws: - Did yon ever go astray? that is, were yon ever lost; N"o1 Well I was; and so were three others who were with nle laJli Tuesday. We were a merry quartette, Annie. Lodi, Leslie and George that fair April morning, as we started afoot from [liberty's at Lagunitas towards Bolinas Ridge, Wo had heard imich from daring travelers of the attractions of Cataract Gulch, and with what papa calls juvenile curiosity, we determined to invade its Bolitude with all our revelry, and join the merry wood nymphs in their glee; So, with generously filled lunch baskets strapped at our sides and carrying mu 1 trusty Alpine sticks, we proceeded on our way with buoyant step and feelings. Of course we knew the way. Had we not heard it told fully fifty times and in fifty ways? Why shouldn't we? YACHTING. Mr.Gutte and a large party were out Saturday with the Chispa, A most delightful time was spent cruising around the hay. The "Maison Dorce" prepared the lunch at a cost which one might suppose could have bought out the establishment, Mr. Gutte took the Chispa up to Benicia in the evening where she is now on the ways. On Sunday he brought down the Nellie, Mervyn Donahue, Peter Donahue, Wm. D. O'Kane and James Pew being on board. She is now anchored at the Pacific Clubhouse, Captain Grant was out on Saturday with the Halcyon having a merry party on hoard. Commodore Harrison and party were out with the Frolic on last Sunday. The Lolita was out Sunday, going outside the heads with a party of gentlemen. When about four miles out the party had the pleasure of witnessing a small cloudburst. The Fleur de Lis was also outside the heads Sunday, and also the Annie, Phil Cadouc sailing the latter over the four-fathom bank heading for Bolinas Point. The Lurline remained at her moorings ...
SAN RAFAEL LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 16 April 1885
SAN RAFAEL LETTER. (BY OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT.) San Rafael, April L 5, N">. Ed. News: —On Iast Wednesday night San Rafael was visited by a thunder storm. About 7 o'clock the sky became suddenly overcast. and soon heaven's artillery opened fire. Peal on peal rent the air, the rain poured down in torrents, while the lightning's vivid glare lighting the streets with the brightness of day lent a glorious and awful grandeur to the terrible still fascinating scene. As I gazed I wondered if the storm was auspicious of a bounteous patronage to Dougherty's rink which opened on that night. It did seem to be so for the rink was crowded to suffocation. Skating was indulged in until ten o'clock, when the floor was given up to the devotees of the light fantastic. The music was furnished by the San Rafael brass band. Every one seemed to enjoy themselves, and the management received great praise. !f present appearances are any criterion the enterprise will be a success. On Friday last...
