$4,000 REWARD—On opening two boxes of gold dust, one at Philadelphia marked John DeWitt & Co. New York, and the other at Baltimore marked T. D. & S. (B. underneath, apparently,) a part of the contents are missing. These boxes were shipped on board the steamship Oregon the last of September at San Francisco for Panama, and thence overland to Chagres, at which place they were re shipped for New York by the steamship Empire City, and at New York forwarded by Railroad to Philadelphia and Baltimore. Near 600 ounces of gold dust, worth over $10,000, appears to have been abstracted, by boring the wood of both boxes with an instrument of about one Inch size, and plugging the holes with white pine, using a small red tape around the end of the plug, and by piercing the tin in the first box with a different Instrument, and the sheet iron bottom of the second box with a reaming iron of about half an Inch, and the new holes in both boxes sealed with bright red sealing wax...

FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 25, 1850 llini'iinl of Ihr ( mtnm Hnntf, [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 25 January 1850

FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 25, 1850 llini'iinl of Ihr ( mtnm Hnntf, Wo understand that it is in contemplation to removo the Custom House from its) present location in tho adobe building in Portsmouth square, to th* warehouse recently erected in Clay street. Thin building, by the way, presents a very fine appearance, and is really an ornamont to this section of San Francisco. It is very well built, and is ovory way a suitable construction for a Custom House; although, tho distance from the water presents many objections to its locality. If it is to remain near the square, however, we deem the chnngo a good one. The present building i* totally unfit for tbo purpose, and affords scarcely room enough "to swing a cat in;" greatly impeding the transaction of business, nnd seriously incommoding the officers of tho customs. If tho removal is made, the building must bo lot or appropriated to some other purpose for tho use of government, and we wish to any a word in timo in reforenco to this sub...

I'or tlir Altn California. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 25 January 1850

For the Alta California. Messrs. Editors : — The United States Attorney for Oregon, Hon. Mr. Holbrooke, arrived in the Panama, and is now in this city at the Graham House, and as it has been generally understood that the law of Congress by which a Custom house was established here, provided for the prosecution of all offences against the Revenue laws in the Court of Oregon, we trust that immediate measures will be taken by him for enforcing these laws, at least until Congress establishes the proper Courts in this State. The office has been vacant until now, and though we are sure that the Collector has done all that be could to protect the interests of American merchants, yet the evil has increased to such an enormous extent, that active and vigilant means should be taken at once or the Revenue laws will become of no force, and the property of the honest merchant be sacrificed to make room for cheaper goods illegally imported. We have already suffered too much, and we invoke the att...

LOCAL MATTERS [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 25 January 1850

LOCAL MATTERS Music of the Spheres - We are as great admieres of sweet and dulcet sounds as Orpheus or any of the other gods and goddesses. We have heard some sweet sounds in our time, and have heard almost all the celebrities in music who have appeared in America during the last fifteen years, from the greasy fiddling of a steamboat "nigger," accompanied by the "pattings of Juba," to the soft and delicious liquidities that followed the bow of Ole Bull Vieuxtemp and their contemporaries; we hare listened with aching head and afflicted spirit, to the drumming on the piano of some Miss of "thweet thixtcen," and we hare seen DeMeyer spring upon his instrument— the lion pianist, and also beard Henri Herz. We have listened to " I'd be a butterfly " from itinerants in the street to the accompaniment of a hand-organ, and we have hoard Caradori Allen, Mrs. Wood and Madame Bishop, in the house of God, to the rich and swelling notes of the mighty and solemn organ. The crash of the orchestra, ...
