inalnews [<-X. Gene V. Robinson Priest s career ends over gay bishop conflict Associated Press BRISTOL, Conn. — Several parishioners at St. John's Church in Bristol reacted with resigned acceptance to the dismissal of their priest in a conflict over the elevation of a gay bishop in New Hampshire. Connecticut Bishop Andrew D. Smith on Jan. 14 removed Mark H. Hansen from his position following a six-month "inhibi- tion," or suspension. Hansen resigned last September. Senior warden David C. Desmarais said fol- lowing church services that the situation is out of the hands of St. John's Church. "It's not our matter anymore," he said. "This is between the bishop and Mark Hansen." Diocesan officials said last year that Hansen was suspended because he took an unauthorized sabbatical and St. John's had stopped making payments on a loan for its building. Hansen maintained he notified Smith about his plans. The conflict stems from Smith's support for the Rev. V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshi...

inalnews Questions about Brokeback: ban anger Utah theater owner Miller stands by decision to pull movie about gay cowboy love just before speaking on importance of equality at NAACP event Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY — Moments before speaking to the NAACP on the importance of working toward equality, Utah Jazz owner Larry H. Miller angrily refused to explain his decision to pull "Brokeback Mountain" from one of his movie theaters. Miller, on his way to speak at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's annual Martin Luther King luncheon, shoved a KSL Radio reporter's microphone away, glared at the reporter and said, "I said everything I had to say when I pulled the movie. OK? Anything else you want to know?'1' Miller, who also owns the minor league ball club the Salt Lake Bees, has yet to say why he canceled showing of the R-rated Western gay romance story at the Megaplex at Jordan Commons in Sandy. That had been the only one of his theaters that had been ...

inalnews sexuals as essentially the same, then you're open- ing the door to requiring that you treat homosex- ual couples the same as heterosexual couples and you're unable to deny them the privilege of mar- riage." Murray said these type of groups are attempt- ing to confuse the issue. "Laws governing employment have nothing to do with laws governing marriage," he said. The bill, with the backing of Governor Christine Gregoire, is expected to pass the House, where it passed last year on a 61-37 vote, with six Republicans joining 55 Democrats. Finkbeiner's switch all but assures its passage in the Senate, where it was previously defeated after two Democrats, Jim Hargrove of Hoquiam and Tim Sheldon of Potlatch, joined 23 Republicans in defeating the bill 25-24. Sheldon and Hargrove have said they have no plans to change their vote. Fuiten and others, including the Rev. Ken Hutcherson, pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Redmond, said they will pressure other Democrats to switch their v...

Virginia lawmakers approve ballot measure on same-sex marriage A bill setting a November referendum on adding Virginia's gay marriage ban to the state constitution was approved without debate Monday in the House of Delegates. The vote was 76-20. The constitutional amendment itself won General Assembly approval last year and was passed again by the House on Friday. Constitutional amendments must pass in consec- utive General Assembly session, with an inter- vening House of Delegates election, to be placed on the ballot. The Senate has not yet passed the measure a second time. The bill passed by the House on Monday spec- ifies how the ballot question will be worded. Opponents have argued that the ballot question, which summarizes the effect of the amendment, is too vague. Virginia law already defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Supporters of the constitutional amendment say it is needed to make clear that Virginia does not have to recog- nize gay marriages or civil...

German state reviews moral questions for citizenship Associated Press BERLIN — The German state of Baden- Wuerttemberg said Jan. 12 it would review ques- tions on morals asked of would-be citizens after complaints by Muslims and Jews. The justice minister of the southwestern state said questions used to assess the suitability of applicants for German citizenship would be reviewed in six months. "I assume that some of the questions will silently disappear, including one about homo- sexuality, Ulrich Goll said on Suedwestrundfiink radio. He also denied reports that the questions were only put to Muslims. Starting Jan. 1, state officials have been given a list of 30 questions to be used as guidelines dur- ing interviews with applicants for citizenship. Possible questions include probing applicants' opinions on sexuality, arranged marriages and how young women should dress. "Imagine that your grown up son comes to you and explains that he is homosexual and would like to live with another...

An open letter to the people of the Dallas GLBr community Director of Log Cabin's campaign against Proposition 2 praises the courageous people he met while working in North Texas As I move into 2006 and begin plans to fight for equal rights for GLBT Americans, I am often mindful of the coura- geous folks I met in Dallas this past year. Since the election in November, I have been sharing the stories of faith, dedication and coalition-building I wit- nessed in Dallas in the face of adversity. November brought Texans a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and gay and straight unmarried relation- ships. These anti-gay attacks were designed to hurt — and they do. But today I encourage a focus on that which makes us stronger. Although we did not win on Nov. 8,1 believe we built a coalition for the future that someday will be disastrous for the religious right. When the Log Cabin Republicans in Dallas contacted me about coming down to help them fight this amendment, I was excited a...

I ife+sty leprofi le • . • transition Andrew Jones makes national TV debut to encourage trarisgerider acceptance. The UNT senior says gays usually have toughest time with gender identity matters By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor W hen you got to go, you got to go. But for Andrew Jones, using a public rest- room can be a nightmare. Twenty years ago, the Lewisville native was given the birth name Amanda. Three years ago, upon entering college, Amanda became Andrew. But he was still shy about using public restrooms. "I usually tried not to," Jones says. "I would just wait and go to my apartment. Occasionally I'd use the men's room, but back then, I was pret- ty scared." Most of his youth was confusing. Jones was a voracious reader and a "computer geek," he remembers. "I wasn't a tomboy or athletic at all," he says. At 14, he noticed that lesbians often dressed butch. "And I thought 'Oh, well that's what I want to present. I want people to think that I'm a guy and treat me that way,...

rolling, the evolving bond between Bree and Toby — and the setbacks as he learns more about the strange woman he's trying to take advantage of— are believable because we come to love the characters as they come to love each other. Huffman, whose career has deservedly taken off with "Desperate Housewives," is amazing as a woman whose body is "a work in progress." The actress is helped by makeup that makes her look like Ian McKellen in drag and a perfectly awful (in a good way) wig. She has the exagger- atedly feminine movements of someone who hasn't quite got the hang of it yet. Her "church lady" pose could be patterned after Katherine Hepburn in "The African Queen." You'll laugh when she tells Toby, "Stop calling me dude." And your heart will sink with hers when an 8-year-old asks, "Are you a boy or a girl?" Bree is quite a person, if not quite a woman. Toby is more of a stock character, the street- wise innocent who had to learn to fend for him- self too young. He's childlike when ...

books Rosie in talks to revive magazine Rosie O'Donnell plans to take another stab at publishing a magazine. While in New York last week promoting her upcoming HBO documen- tary, "All Aboard: Rosie's Family Cruise," O'Donnell revealed that she's in talks with "a very well-known publisher" to revive an updated version of Rosie magazine, which folded in September 2002. O'Donnell said she wants another shot because losing control of the magazine was "by far O'Donnell the most hideous part of her career." Last week, O'Donnell also announced plans to launch a sketch comedy show on Logo TV. But plans for more children have been canned. -style music Golden girl Trip-hop veteran Alison Goldfrapp revels in influences all her own By Gilbert Garcia Pop Music Critic Goldfrapp "Supernature" Mute Music genres are never easy to assign, and lately they've become useless. Take British techno siren Alison Goldfrapp. First heard on Tricky's 1995 debut "Maxinquaye," the then-university-student earned her trip-hop wings almost by accident. Before long, the young singer was popping up on albums by electronic artists like Orbital and Add N to X. But it wasn't until the end of the '90s, when she teamed up with producer Will Gregory to form her eponymous group, that we even learned what Goldfrapp's own sensibilities sounded like. Now on their third album, the duo Goldfrapp find themselves as distinct from Alison's early days as they are from the rest of today's electronic scene. Drawing its inspiration largely from the groundbreaking techno sound of the '70s and '80s, the new disc, "Supernature," seems worlds away from contemporary ...
