lg3WI ilil$ Film Industry Hopes for Better Season in 1992 by Tara Tremaine It is incredible that the movie in- dustry looks back at 1991 as just a mediocre year. Studio executives were quick to blame the recession for the less than blockbuster attendance. But at an average of $6.50 a ticket the 998 billion moviegoers last year doesn't seem all that bad does it? Fortunately for the executives the new year has arrived with promises of better movies and hopes that the public will be a little more frivilous with their spending money. Approximately 220 films are slated for release inl992 and amazingly Arnold Schwartznegger currently the biggest box office draw is not ex- pected to be in any of them. But never fear Mr. I'll Be Back has usually kept his word. So what can we expect? Along with the usual actionadventure ro- mance and comedies Hollywood con- tinues it's recent trend of biograghies. Of course summerjustwouldn'tbe the same without potential blockbuster se- quels. Here's just a ...

ilfli Baseball Season Opens on 40-Acres Despite Weather By Chris Cafalone The weather might not agree but baseball season is here on the Forty Acres. The Cowboys have been practic- ing about two weeks for their season opener with University of Texas The home season begins Friday Feb. 7 with Sul Ross. That game is at 2 p.m. at John J. Hunter Field. Hardin-Simmons Baseball Coach Marvin Stringfellow begins his third year as the Cowboy "field general" with 18 of his 26 players being first year members of the HSU program. Stringfellow feels very optimistic about his team this year as they compete in the TIAA Conference. One reason for the optimism of a successful Spring came last Fall as the Cowboys won four of their last five contests including a victory over a highly-touted McClennan Junior Col- lege. Stringfellow along with first- year Assistant Coach James King will look for leadership from co-captains Scott Douglas and Jim Simon to guide the young Cowboys through a 52-game schedule ...

lillll Cowboys Drum Indians 77-70 To the HSU Cowboy basketball team the 77-70 win over McMurry Indians on Saturday Jan. 25 was just another game toward their goal of winning 20 games. But for the HSU crowd of 1200 fans it was a win over their cross-town rivals. The win gave the Cowboys a 10 and 4 record and dropped McMurry to a record of 9 and 6. Brandon Wood a 6'0" 160 lbs. freshman guard said the crowd was as much a part of the game as the players. Wood added that he expected a better Indian team than was at the game. They were slow and their shooting was off. When the teams broke for half time Coach Dennis Harp felt really positive even though the Cowboys were down in scor- ing. For Wood being a part of the team is an honor. Wood says his goals are to do the best he can to help the team get where they want to go. He said that as a team Harp set down three goals. The first win 20 games second to win the TIAA Con- ference and third to do well in the NAI A playoffs. The Cowboys will...

OpinionsEditorial Distributed by Tribune Media Services m0t?- ; HICK KENNEDY! WWUZIN6 Aw fA STORIES ARE Vv AAft FMSE! 7W I in I was sitting in a local truck-stop this weekend sipping a cup of hot Java and watching a marathon of CNN on the little black and white TV at my booth when the story broke in the Star Magazine that Democratic presidential hopeful Bill Clinton might have had an affair with someone at sometime in his past. As is my naturally conservative nature I was immediately appalled that a person with such rank could sin in any way and it led me to wonder what dark secrets some of the other candidates have hidden in their pasts. So since I have been shanghaied into being a reporter for the Brand. I de- cided to doabit of undercover reporting and this is what I dug up: Jerry Brown: In the fourth grade Brown was found guilty of repeatedly placing a whoppee-cushion in the chair of his teacher. She later complained of severe anxiety attacks. Tom Harkin: Accused of accepting hu...

ffl&fEntcffiihiHeiil-i Tomatoes and Canyon: Movies That Should Be Seen by Tara Tremaine Going to the movies is always a gamble. It's a drag to spend $5.50 on a movie and walk out feeling that it was a total waste of your time and money. Now with so many films in release and with such diverse ideas being presented making a choice between a potential success orapotentialbombis even harder. Fortunately word of mouth is a movie's best PR and there are a two films that deserve good lip service. They are both period films that address the im- portance of relationships the meaning of life and the struggle with social issues that affect that day. Fried Green Tomatoes: With a title like this it's hard to know what exactly to expect. But don't let it fool you this is a wonderful film. Set in present day Whistle Stop Alabama with flashbacks into the 1920's and 30's it's a story within a story. The most exciting plays of the match came when Nelson put up a three-point shot in the last second of the first half to break the tie at half-time taking the Cow boys to the locker room with a 34-3 1 lead. Jeff Wood brought the crowd to their feet in the second half by bouncing circles around the 1008 defense and used some fancy footwork to get the quick two points.
