Engbrock Managing Editor Donnita Nesbit Fisher Dallas County pursues development of strategic plan || ; N Guest Editorial What school districts don't want you to know By Donnis Baggett Texas school districts and legislators are working behind the scenes make it harder for you to know how your tax dollars are being spent. They will be successful unless they hear that you don't want that to happen. And that would be a huge step backward for open government in the Lone Star State. Both public school finance bills pending in the special legislative ses- sion, HB 2 and SB 2, contain provisions that would greatly limit the amount of information school districts are required to post in newspapers about such critical matters as bids, land sales and even tax rate adoption hearings. They would allow districts to post minimum information in news- papers and direct them to the district's website for det...

While the county has elevated the ban on some types of fireworks, there are still plenty of personal pyrotechnics available. In Texas, fireworks can be sold twice a year, from June 24 through July 4 and from Dec. 20 through Jan. 1. There are about 50 retail fireworks stands in Collin County, according to the fire marshal's office. Guidelines for operating a fireworks stand include: The stands must be super- vised by someone at least 16 years of age, and the vendors cannot sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 12. Additionally, smoking or open flames are prohibited within 10 feet of the stand. Most cities in the county have specific ordinances prohibiting the sale, possession and discharge of fireworks within the city limits. Some of the larger cities with popu- ...

Page 6 - Section B - THE SACHSE NEWS - Thursday, June 30, 2005 mmmm orts Opinion Spurs win; what took so long? Rick Atkinson Congratulations to the San Antonio Spurs, champions of the NBA. I thought it would never end. Can somebody tell me why a pro basketball team has to beat the other team four times before claiming to be superior? Heck, the Spurs showed they could whup the Pistons right off the bat in Game 1. Then again in Game 2. But, no, we had to wait five more games, (so everyone involved could fill their coffers.) What's that? The first two games in San Antonio weren't fair, you say, because the Spurs were getting to play at home? Hey, the Spurs earned the right to play at home, didn't they? If you don't like that, then play better during the regular season and earn the home-court advan- tage. Personally, I'd like to see the whole thing over and done with in one game. What a novel idea. Both teams show up, ready to play, with everything on the line, and settle it- right then...

"Alcohol can affect your judg- ment out there," Hunt said. Some parks around the lake are affected by local city ordinances prohibiting alcohol in public parks. These are East Fork, Avalon, Lavonia, Mallard. Little Ridge and Pebble Beach. However, drunk driving laws apply to anyone operating a water- craft. In addition, boaters should learn the "rules of the road" when it comes to navigating on the water. "Tluu is especially important for personal wateicralt," Hunt said. "We have a lot of accidents out here because people don't know the rules of the road." Another important component of lake safety: life jackets. "We encourage anyone on their boat to have l...
