STANLEY JOTTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 22 November 1890

STANLEY JOTTINGS   (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT)   I think I neglected to mention in my previous letter that no inquest was held on F. Goram owing to the Coroner, Mr. Geo. Anderson, being unwell at the time ; but the investigation subsequently held clearly proved ' accidental death.'   The public meeting called to consider the question of a Local Board of Health was held last night (Wednesday) -as the hall was engaged for Thursday. There were present the convenor of the meeting and another. In a large district like this the farmers live at too great a distance to attend public meet-   ings, and the residents of Stanley, on whom the honorary work of Local Boards mainly devolves, have already their hands full, and shrink from undertaking further responsi-   bilities. Were an epidemic to break out in the district local action would -probably be taken, but in a locality so exceptionally favoured as regards salubrity, that i...

THE BEAR IN THE WASHTUB. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 26 November 1890

THE BEAR IN THE WASHTUB. It seems that the settlers In the more open parts of the United States are still occasion ally honored by visits from beam. On a washing day recently a farmer's wife had just put the olothes in a washtub that stood on a bench at tho back of the house, when she ob served a bear coming leisuroly through the front gate. Thinking it only right that her husband should be informed of the arrival of the interesting stranger, she went to tho barn where he was engaged in threshing his corn. Arming himself with his flail, he proceeded' back to tho housn. whom Mi-. Rmin WH »«n to upset tho bench on which stood tho tub. The tub tipped over on' to 'the' bear, drench ing it with water,' and covering it like an ei tinguisher covers a candle. Of course the oreaturcBhbok itself ;free at once, but the wet clothes olung to its feet and legs and body. Tho farmer was not slow to bestow thumping knocks on tho bear, which ronred loudly, nnd tried to. bolt away, ns well as its stra...

OUR PUPPY. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 26 November 1890

? ? ? OUR PUPPY. Jane said that our puppy Dido was enough to drive a body mad I This is why she said bo. Before broakfnst ho had torn the lin ing out of fathor's slipper, munched up a lace cap of mother's and a kid glove of Jane's, upset the bacon at the fire, and put his noao into the milk. Then, when tied up at the foot of the stairs, he howled till ho made his throat sore, so nt last ho was turned out into tho garden. ' Just what I wanted 1' barked Dido, scampering wildly nt the dancing leaves, and rolling over ana over. ' now I do like a brcezo, it makes Everything look so lively, and freshens up my coat.
