NITROGEN AND PASTURES. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

NITROGEN AND PASTURES. The results aehieved. by coinbiucd dressings of phosphates ;ui(l potash are often so striking that it is assumed tin: ? application of nitrogen is riot nee/led. as it is 'Cc<i that this need of tho plant for nitrogen is covered by tho supply collected from tho atmos phere by tht) clovers produced by the phosphate and potash. The. correctness of this view is, how ever, questioned, and it is not good policy in the long run to neglect the application of small quantities of nit rogen. It is admittod that' clovers possess the capacity of assimilating at mospheric nitrogen, but it is found tluit quite young plants have this power 011I3'! to a limited extent, and until ar rived at a. certain stage of development are obliged to avail themselves of the nitrogen in tho soil. An exclusive application of phosphate and potash to old pastures may be des cribed as one-sided manuring, even al though for a time, the grass may be increased; by it. By continued ex clu...

GARDENING BY THE BLIND. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

GARDENING BY THE BLIND. Would you know a geranium (asks a London writer) if you wore not allowed to open your eyes, and onl\- permitted to feol it? Probably you would not, but tho pupils at Swiss Cottage School for tho Jjlind ;u*o exports in gardening by touoh and smell, and by tlicso means culti vate all their flowers. They can distinguish almost any flow er cither by touching it with their fing ers and thumbs, or by .smelling it. Their sensei of touch also guiides them in weeding. By feeling tlio~wccd, t-hcy distinguish it from a flower. A tost was applied to ono of tho younger gardeners of tho school. Ho irf fourteen years of age, and has boon totaLly blind from birth. lie was ask ed to name all tho flowers ho felt and almost every answer he gave was oor rcct. ' ;!This one is an antirrhinum," lie .said, feeling it lightly between iingor and thumb. "This is .a weed, while this ono is a nasturtium." Ho easily knew, a geranium and a chrysanthemum, although t-horo were no flowers on ...

OBSERVATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

OBSERVATIONS. The hoe is a bigger prosperity maker than any tariff, high on low. Tho pessimist looks only for clouds, tho optimist only for sunshine, but tho wiso man prepares for both. Do-spito tho usual way of' looking at it, tho farm-hand who raises a good big crop of potatoes is a bigger man than tho lawyor who raises a, disturbance. . Now, boys, if you intend to set tho world on fire, don't uso up all your matches lighting cigarettes. About the only, place a woman can economist) those days iji on her hus band's clothes., There is one crop that is a 1ways abun dant, and yet is* often a failure, and that is advico. Tho trouble with a good many of us is that we aro trying to make to-mor row pay for day before yesterday. Women are usually, kind to all dumb animals vxeept the man who cannot talk volubly. Lots of us aro so busy acquiring and taking enru of the means of enjoyment that we have no time to enjoy our selves. Count no man lazy until you have triid him with tho right work. ...

THOSE WHO STAY AT HOME. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

THOSE WHO STAY AT HOME. There are some in this world who arc compelled to tarry at home. The great raoe of life goes on, and they, are left behind; ihey are too weak to* run. . . They have nothing to do with the toil -of the brain; their work is all with the heart. But what a work that is! The toils of tho hand,'and brain are nothing to it; these yield a solace to their en ergy, but the sad heart has only to bear. It is harder to bear than todo. I may be rudely jostled in the race,"but the race itself gives an excitement that makes me forget my pain. I am there, at least, in the company of my fellow men; But to tarry, at home, to wait assive under the shadow of God, to ave nothing to do but the burden of one great' oross; this is the trial of life -fckis is the trial of Ipve.

LITTLE THINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 11 March 1914

LITTLE THINGS. A little word, said pleasantly in pas sing, may brighter up some careworn fellow's day; a little sneer, a Jjttle bit ter sa&sing, may change his sJlfies from gold to sombre gray A little praiso may send feet blithely tripping, that otherwise would drag the long day through; a little help, when sorno poor cuss is slipping, may start him right and bring success in - view. A little, roar when vicious things are brewing may spoil the brew, and oil xip Virtue's wings; a little kiok when statesmen are pursuing false gods may bring them 'round to hotter things. A liHle sense may make us seem a fountain of wis dom if you keep your tongue on straight; a littlo debt may soon become a mountain, and crush you down be neath its galling weight. The little things mako life a joy or nuistmee; if you ignore this fa«t, when you are grny, vou'H realise you were a blooming goose since you let the be.vt of^ntf things got away. -Walt Mason.

PAINFUL SUNBURN. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 11 March 1914

PAINFUL SUNBURN. I have seen a child (a boy of cloven) crying bitterly from tho pain caused by the sun burning of liis legs, which had been exposed all day long on the sea-beach to the full glaro of the mid summer sun, writes Florence Stacpoolo lecturer to tho Nationnl Health So ciety of England. Many people forget that sunburn often causes as much 'pain as frostbite, and sunburnt legs often cause a Jot of suffering from which it would bo quite easy to protect them by greasing them all over before tho child goc.s out in tho morniug. Tho nicest thing for tho purposo is olive oil, lanoline, or vaseline, but this would corno rather expensive if tho .summer should be a long, hot one, and if there should bo a largo number of legs to be operated upon. ft is, therefore, well to remember that any kind of cloan kitchen grease will answer as well. Tho grea.se should be wh:it cooks call .'rendered" beforo it is used for an ointing tho skin. Tho process of "ren dering" is quite simple. Put all ...

Women's National League ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL AT LISMORE. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 11 March 1914

Women's National League ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL AT LISMORE. The Lismore branch of the Women's National League is a well-organised body with a reputation for the success ful performance of whatever it under takes to do. That explains why, on such a sultry night as Tuesday, so many attended the anniversary social at the Mechanics' Hall when the natu ral impulse was to lounge about outside and cool-od after the fatigues of the day. Despite the trying conditions, a very pleasant evening was spent by all. There was plenty of variety. Speeches of just about the right length were made by the president, Mrs J. L. Car rie, and Mr D. S. Oman, M.L.A. ; then Salamagundy occupied an exciting half hour or so. This was succeeded by musical items and selections on the Larra gramaphone, supper, and a wind up dance. The admission was by silver J coin, and it is safe to assert that every one had full value for their money. Mrs J. L. Currie, in her little address, J said it was the birthday of the Austra- j...

Make Your District Known [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 11 March 1914

Make Your District Known Concerning some parts of the district news comes but seldom. This is not entirely our fault; wehave .no miracu lous power of knowing what is happen ing at all the places within our drea of circulation. It is the fault of residents in the silent places. Will some man' or woman take the matter in hand and cause the silence to cease ? If no one else is doing it for your district, will you try on these lines ? Send accounts of public and social events in your township and neighbour hood, such as weddings, deaths, acci dents, concerts, matters touching dis trict industries, etc. Write the names of persons very distinctly. Dont bother about grammar or spell ing ; it's the editor's work to look after those trifles. The barest skeleton is enough. Write only on one side of the "paper. Write- your name and address on some corner-not for publication, but to prove good faith. Give information; but let criticism alone.
