TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 3 June 1880

TO THE EDITOR OF MrE GUARDIAN. Sin,-The interests of the ratepayers of the Slhire of Buln BuIn may now be said to be fairly.arouiod upon. the question of tram ways. . thlink this a happy circumstuane, ,as I am of opinion that the Shire Council ought not to conunmit the district to an enor mous debt without the voice of.therate payers being first heard. I would most re spectfully sugogest that it is desinable to hold lpublie meetings inn different parts of the Shire to fully?p?didc the Aoatfcr, and por=, cect such a scheme as would be most accept able to the whole district; and, if found noe cossary, to take a poll of .the rkttpayers on tlhe qiest.ion ait the next.election ofoouncil lors. 'Personally, I au. iot interested in. trunwa}s. I fully rccgnise th forice of Cr. Sullivan's remarks at the histmCboincil meeting, that ratopayers living; near the railway line are not in favor of tramways they don't require them. But I am not sol .ish enough not to sympathise with those fiat-payers...

OUR PROPOSED TRAMWAYS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 3 June 1880

OUR PROPOSED TRAnMWAYS. TO THE EDITOROP TRE GARIIDIAl.V' f; SIR,--In your issue of the 20th ult. you advocate the construction of the proposed itaunway from Darnum to Bear Crock, in preference to the route from Warragul to that locality. dling a resident of enar Creek, it is my intention to briefly address ;myself to that subject. Your article states, that should the line start from Warragul en inute to Neerim, all engineering dilliculties would be absent. Exactly the seane can be said of the line from Darnum to this locality. If we ascend any neighboring ominence, or travel from here to Darnum, sw ascertdin 'that the country is comparatively 'lovel, while Warragul is separated from us by hills and valleys, so that an unnecessaryex penditure would be avoided by starting from Darnum. Then again, it-would-be benefi cial to i g"reiter numiber of selectors, aind would ýalso be in accdrdancO with their: de sires. If, we optained this tramway, it would irove a great acquisitioni to usi; a...

THE LOCAL LABOR MARKET. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 3 June 1880

THE LOCAL LABOR MARKET. TO THE EDITOR. OF TH GUARDIAN. Sir - Having seen by your last week's issue a statement made by Mr. John George in the Council Chamber that tenyears ago he could get labor cheaper than he can now, I should like to know in what way it was to be done. : It might have been done by, em ploying men to run in wild cattle, and the more they killed the better the pay. I am an old resident of seven years standing and scrub that I could 1pd per acre for then, I can only get 10s. to 12s. 6d. for now. Tim ber that used to be rung for 6s. per acre is   now being done for 2s.; so I think the sooner there are some of the unemployed, sent to some of the Buln Buln Councillors the sooner they will go back and so add a little to the expenses of the Railway De partment. By inserting this you will oblige AN OLD SCRUBCUTTER. Drouin, 31st May, 1880.

THE LATE FIRE AT HALSTEAD AND KERR'S [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 10 June 1880

THILE LATE FIRIAT ITALSTEAD AND KERR'S FROM A FI? rm POINT OF VIEW. While taking a stroll round tho Exhibition on Sunday, one of my companions remarked that we had better 'maike tracks for home quickly s a storm was aplproaching. 1 asked wlhat reason ho had for predicting a shower, when lie pointed to a volume of smoke (which he took to be a cloud) rising up from behind the gaol: "That's a fire at Halstead and Kerr's; I viewed the. conflagaration that took place there twelve years ago from this standpoint " said 1. " Let's go and. see it," said he. "All right" said I, and away i-ce went. Biut the six miles an hour to which the excitement had nerved me was too much for my friend's walking capacity, so he tried to leave nc 'behind by starting off at a run; butl had himn again there, for knowing a little about that business from past experience, I waited on him till I found lie was in trouble, when, putting on;i. graind spurt, I left him behind, and hesubsided into his ordinary four mi...
