TOO MUCH ANXIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 30 April 1859

Too Mucn ANXIETy.-Ofthe causes of disease, anxietv of mind is one of the most frequent and important. When we walk the streets of large commercial towns; we can scarcely fail to remark the hurried gait and care worn features of the well dressed pas sengers. Some young men, indeed we may see with countenances posses sing natural cheerfulness and color; but those appearances rarely survive the age of manhood. Cuvier closes an eloquent description of animal exis tence and change with the conclusion that "life is a state of force." What he would urge in a physical veiw, we may more strongly urge in a moral. Civilization has changed our character of mind as well as of body W"e live in a state of unnatural excitement; because it is partial, irregular, and ex cessive. Our muscles waste for want of action; our nervous system is worn out by excess of action. Vital energy is drawn from the operation for which nature designed it, and devoted opera tibns which it never contemplated. Winkles, on...

AMERICAN INDIANS. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 30 April 1859

AMERICAN INDIANS. (/Pom the Times.) The policy of the Americans with regard to the aborigines of thier soil has been generally characterized by great liberality and solicitude. If the Indians have suffered anything beyond the inevitable effects of civilization, it has been owiing to the lawless practices of individuals. By the state they have been usually treated well, and, indeed it is in this field that the ingenuity of Transatlantic philanthropists has found one of its best opportunities for exer cise. The problem had consisted in softening a necessary fall, and in miti gating as far as possible a fate from which there was no escape.. Every body sees that the Red Indians, as a race, are doomed, but their doom may be lightened by management and care; and, possibly, in the end some few relies of the ancient nation may be absorbed without actual extinction, in the great American community. In this branch of administration ethnolo gical researches can be applied with considerable adv...

THE LAND CLAMOUR.—FREE PASTURAGE AND FREE SELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 7 May 1859

THE LAND CLAMOUR.--FREE PAS i TURAGE AND FREE SELECTION. FRoM the views we have already ex pressed .upon this question, it must be evidlent that we regard the land a"dministration of the colony as em :bracing two great objects-the, secu rity and success of pastoral pursuits, and the agricultural settlement of our cultivatable territories. That these two grand aims are not incompatible : with each other, is a truth of which we have abundant assurance, in the progress of that colony whose agricul ?tural:resources have been more exten sively and perfectly developed than those of any other in the Australian Sgroup.. While the farmers of South Australia have been enriched by the S.profitable exportation of their surplus produce to Victoria, and the demand :.for .land for cultivation, consequent upon this favourable condition, has been constantly and amply supplied, t`ihe squatters of that colony occupy a position far more advantageous than Sthat assigned to their brethren in the two prov...

A NOTORIOUS SWINDLER. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 7 May 1859

A NOTORIOUS SWINiLER:i: :. . the' . T, ou.ne ra?d. ,A? man named Robertson, a notori-. ous swindler, who has hitherto suem ceeded in evading the'law was yester day brought up 'at thei City Polic? Court, the third or fourth time on re mand, ciarged with being a ruffian and a vagabond. A charge had prie-. viously been preferred against, the fellow of stealing money from a dwdel ing, but lest the ends of justice might be evaded, this was very properly withdrawn for one of vagrancy. It appears that Robertson, alias Robinson, alias Ahnde.son, alias Rushton, has.'been for some time past practising his pecu liar art in the rural parts; but having. taken a longing for the excitement of a city life, he left his country haunts, perhaps as much from' policy as any thing else, to pay a visit to the metro polis. But, desiring to combine with the excitement of a city life the repose of a suburban residence, he had found his way down to Windsor, and, tapping: at the door of one Gee. French, polite...

The report of the committee, of which Mr. MAnTIN was chairman, containing minutes of all the evidence taken in their enquiry, has been printed, and, we presume, a motion for its adoption will be one of the...

Miscellaneous Extracts. JUDICIAL DISCRETION. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 7 May 1859

·'.iisncollu 0rFos fQFttacts; ' JUDICIAL DISCRETION. ' , When a juryman does something more.than ordinarily absurd-like the learnied gentleman .wlio .wrote ,to .the STimesn to explain that he had.correcteii iir Oresawell Cresswell's law by a re-, ference to " Jdhnson's Dictionary,'" one naturally feels grateful for an in stitutiou .which provides casual and to some. extent irresponsible arbiters to monopolize the blundering which, in some shape or other, seems a neces eary. element in every tribunal.. The superior wisdom of the Bench becomes the more conspicuous from the foil which a .jury. supplies; and if by a curious compromise, a dozen men vailqethe t damage of having one's con slitiition. shattered by a railway col li'.ion at the respectable sum .of a far tling, the law rather gains in dignity; though at the expense of justice, in the, particular case.
