WHAT'S A GENTLEMAN? [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 29 March 1884

WHAT'S A GENTLEIMAN "What is Mr. Trelill"? I asked a man recently. "He's a gentleman, sir," was the answere; that is, I mean he doesn't do anything." This is by no means an unpopular definition of the word gentleman, but it is, I imagine, as inaccurate as it is sweeping. It is con ceivable that a gentleman may be a person who does nothing, but it does not at all follow that a person who does nothing is a gentleman. Nor is aman who has a large sums of money in the bank or in the funds necessarily a gentleman; nor the possessor of mansions and estates; nor even a belted knight or a gartered earl. A gentleman may be born in a garret or in a palace; he may be a son of 1 pea.ant or a peer. Character, notposition, is the test-worth not wealth. "Shall I give my daughter in marriage to a dishonourable rich man, or to an honour able poor man i " a fathe. asked Themistocles. "I prefer," was the answer,"a man who lacks money, to money which lacks a man." Character then is essential-an honourab...

The Fireman's Song. (Dedicated to the Firemen of Victoria and New South Wales.) In the din and clash of battle, 'Mid the smoke and cannon's roar, When the life bullets rattle, And men their life blood pour For their own dear country's glory, And the rights their fathers won, With triumphs fierce and gory The race for Vict'ry's run. But nobler far and braver Is the Viet'ry Firemen win, When they rush without a waver 'Mid the crashing timbers' din To execute their duty, To save dear human lives, To rescue youth and beauty, To succor babes and wives, 290O

DARK DAYS. A STORY OF LIGHT. CHAPTER III. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 29 March 1884

DARK DAYS. A STORY OF LIGHT. Br G. MexvIrm FsNN. CHAPTER III. (Continued.) Thevery next day, when the major, having satisfied himself that there was plenty of actinism, as he called it, in the atmosphere, had been busily photographing a picturesque group of rocks, Barry acting as his aid from having a fair knowledge of the process, they were asked in, and the brothers 'insisted upon their taking tea. They needed but little pressing, and in the midst of a dissertation on gardening from Captain Sanctuary, there was an interruption. Richard Barry was sitting back iq his chair, atullhing x'Sanctuary, who was bending over her work and forming, he thought, a very charming picture as the light from the shaded lamp fell upon her soft white face and busy hands, while from time to time she looked up to show how she was interested in her father's words and exchanged glances with him. "Yes, sir; it has now become the dream of my life. You see, we take a camera and focus the lens, till we have u...

OUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 29 March 1884

OUR LAST WILL AND TESTA IENT. No person should write his own will, un. less there; be urgent need for it. Perhaps more litigation has arisen from this cause than any other. The most experienced lawyers, not even excepting learned judges, in making their own wills have been known to fail, not, however, in making simple bequests, for injtthat a man of fair intelli. gence and education could scarcely go wrong, but in trying too much in the way of com plex and alternative and contingent destina. tion-in short, looking too deeply into the future.. A man of standing, and one who is constantly in the habit of drawing such documents, should by employed? ? Nothing is saved by being too parsimonious in this respect.. In Scotland, more laxity is permitted in reference to wills than in England since 1838. In the former country, almost anyn kind of written document purporting to dis-. pose odf the testator's property, and suff4cient to show his, intention, is regarded ao a good will. It is not n...

KILLING A MAN-EATER. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 29 March 1884

KILLING A MAN-EATER. It was a lovely day in June, in the year 1881, when in a vast jungle, some twentymiles long, great excitement was caused by a man being torn in pieces by a tiger. This tiger had before kiled five natives and several cattle, so that the Government of India Atrtd a reward of 50 rupees, amounting to .5 in English, to the man who should kill it. A Mr. Thompson was very anxious to have an encounter with this much?dreaded beast. He determined to start the following morning into the jungle on foot with his chikari, or at. teiidait ?1ilver. The same evening he met a r'iond of his named Mr. Collins, who, hearing. -about the tiger, strongly advised him not to - enter tliejungle on foottariihe did he would most certainly be "mauled." Mr. Thompson, however, thought his own judgement the best, and set a t t on the following morning. He and his ehikari had not been away more than half an hour when the latter came running breathlessly to Mr. Collins, telling him that Mr. Thomp...

AN ORIGINAL IDEA ABOUT AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, ... — 29 March 1884

AI ORIGINAL IDEA ABOUT AUSTRALIA. -:?-:4 This was a middle.aged lady, with a mincing manner, suggestive of Miss Knag in "Nicholas Nickleby"-very stout, very smart, very talkative, very certain she:was quite right about everything in the world, and very much determined to astonish and impress the strangers. She succeeded. She was the very first person I have met who knew all about Australia, and really she knows so much that I don't know but that I must go back as soon as possible and find it all out. "Ho! It's quite romantic to think of you and me a meetin' so permiskuous h'after h'all these years." No amount of type could express the in. tensity of her aspirates, and consequently I have only put one h'inu. She put in scores. Every word began with a perfect sigh. She went on " H'of course you don't feel quite so much at h'ease in h'England now as what you used to do." " Well, no," I said, not knowing what in the world she was driving at. " It's bitterly cold here, and with us at thi...
