OUR REGIMENT. WARBURTON DRAMATIC CLUB. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 28 August 1914

OUR REGIMENT. WARBURTON DRAMATIC CLUB     On Saturday night, the Warburton Dramatic Club's company concluded a short but lively season when the curtain fell on "Our Regiment," a farcical comedy of three acts, ad   opted from the German by the au     thor of "Moths," and produced at the Warburton Hall on a scale of unprecedented elaborateness of sc nery and detail, before bumper hou ses. The club seldom repeats a piece unless, as in this instance, to generously aid a neigh boring charity or a Patriotic Fund. "Our Regiment" is, to say the least, a vastly better-...

POTATOES AND BUTTERMILK. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 4 September 1914

POTATOES AND BUTTERMILK An Irishwoman well expressed, the other day, says the London "Daily Chronicle," the value of the national diet of potatoes and buttermilk. "When I was young," she said, "we never heard of consumption. The peo ple were content with potatoes and buttermilk. Now they must have meat and tea. They are healthy enough as children, but few grow up strong. They become consumptive as they grow. They cannot afford good meat, or enough of it, and they will not eat the potatoes and milk that are more nourishing if boiled or baked in their skins. The Irish know this; and, passing the open doors of cot tages to-day, one may still sometimes see the brown, smoking balls turned out of the big pot on to a clothless table round which the family is sit ting. The largest mass of pure rock salt in the world lies under the province of- Galicia, Hungary. It is known to be 550 miles long, 20 broad, and 20 feet in thickness. A day's work for a gelding is often a day and a half for the ...

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. (By "Ambrosine.") Of all the preparations which'delight f the gourmet none is more popular than a well-made salad.- But it is not only the, connoisseur who is devoted to the delightful dish. For many years the 1 public have shoivn an increasing appre clation of the` salad. Ever since Syd ney- Smith, the witty Canon of St. Paul's, wrote his famous, rhyming re, [ cipe the people have taken an interest in that ''great and glorious herbaceous treat" which would "tempt the dying anchorite to eat:" .In the words of the genial cleric some of the principles of salad-making are happily described, hbut: it would be tdo' much to expect'a com-, plete and practical lesson-in the art 't6 be expressed in eighteen lines of verse. Successfully to prepare a salad is hot so simple as one is apt to suppose. (writes a correspondent of the London "Daily Telegraph").
