CREMATION. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 29 October 1887

ORB1MATION, " I-How shall we dispose of our dead ?" is a question that is now exercising tIhe minds of the authorities in the more densely populated cities of the world. A niovement in favour of cremation was initiated thirteen years ago, and this method has been ]argely followed since tlmen by France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Switzeorland, Denmark, and the United States, European graves of the early period -thb bronze age-havo beeoon found to con tain merely jars with aslhes. It is supposed that sentimentalism and a greater respect for the dead, brought in by the era of Ohris. tianity, caused cremation to be abolished, and burial in the ground adopted in substi tution, But India has continued, without cessation, to follow its ancient practice of in cineration, Medical authoritiesmaintain that, were it not for this fact, there would be no such thing as adequately coping with cholera and those infectious fevers which are indigenous to that country. Thie main reasons that are advanced a...

THE EFFECT OF TOWN LIFE ON THE HUMAN BODY. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 29 October 1887

THE EFFECT OF TOWN LIFE ON THE HUMAN BODY, Time papers read at the meeting of the British Association in Manchester were, with one exception, scientific. The most popular paper in the program was that by Dr. J. Milner Fothergil on " The Effect of Town Life upon the Human Body " :--"He said that as a hospital physician he bad been struck by the physical inferiority of the donizens of towns as compared with country people. Special inquiries set on foot .had resulted in proving the great rarity of a pure-bred cockney of the fourth generation, Of old a strong physique for work or war was the one thing to be coveted, Now the active brain was what was required for suc cess in the battle of lifo. In the middle ages the weakly retired to the cloister and thl convent, while the race was reproduced by the strong. Now the offspring of the weakly could be reared by costly prepared foods. The deterioration of town populations could bo seen to be a reversion towards an earlier and lowlier ethnic ...

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 29 October 1887

ANSWEfS TO QUESTIONS, [u\, JohIN TAYLOR.] I InAvYr had Cnquiries from both farmers and miners respecting the geology and capabi litices of the district; as the replies may in terest many, I propose, with your leave, to give them through your journal. I may state that during 31 years surveying from *)angern Oreek on the south, to Goal Olifl' on the north, andl to Katoomba coal mine on the west, I have noted the geological fea tures and mineral outcrops. The arrange ment of these notes would supply the in formation applied for; also tile nature and amount-of the forces that oppose thie miner's progress, How to produce and apply chlemi cal forces in his aid to either shattcr the mineral into slack or to remove it in masses. In short it affects both thie health, the wealth, and the social position of the inquirers. But there is a political danger that every aspiring family is exposed to. I-Iowevor largo the average of tlhe colony may be, it has a limit; but there is no limit to the am b...
