LIBRARIES COMMITTEE. INCREASING ACTIVITIES. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

LIBRARIES COMMITTEE. INCREASING ACTIVITIES. The Library is now well established in its new home, in the Social Service Building, Acton, and the efforts of the Committee are being rewarded with an ever-increasing list of subscribers. The number of volumes in the Library has been increased to approximately 700, and the selection committee, Messrs. W. H. O'Neill, W. H. Bertwistle and S. Anderson, has pre pared a list of 100 or more books, with an appeal to all tastes, orders for which have been given. The Committee hopes that these books will be available for distribution on Monday, 12th July. The views of subscribers as to literature suitable for addition to the Library will be of great assistance to the selection commit tee, and it is hoped that the membership will continue to increase so as to render it pos sible to purchase books as desired. The Committee's object to have a library of 1,000 books will be achieved at an early date.

AUSTRALIAN RULES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

AUSTRALIAN RULES With the end of the first round in sight, interest is increasing weekly in the compe tition, the hard-fought games indicating that the final bouts will be particularly keen. So far Acton is undefeated, with the Federals a match behind, but both teams have been "aware that they've been playing" one an other, and Queanbeyan, Red Hill and East lake are unfortunately not of the same stan dard as the other three teams. The former gave great promise in their opening game, but have since been handicapped by a suc cession of injuries to players. Eastlake, al though it seems to have a huge list of play ers, seems unable to infuse into its eighteen the vim necessary to go and get the ball in stead of waiting for it. Three great games have been played since the last report, the first, between Queanbeyan and Acton, being the finest since the forma tion of the League three years ago. It is, by the way, interesting to note that only four of the Acton team which won the first pre ...

SOCCER FOOTBALL. INTERESTING PREMIERSHIP FIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

? SOCCER FOOTBALL. INTERESTING PREMIERSHIP FIGHT. As a result of the first round of the pre miership roster, Burns Club assumed a strong position at the head of affairs, having se cured victories at the expense of each of the other four clubs. The opening matches of the second round, however, placed quite a different aspect on the competition, Molonglo securing a fine 2-0 victory over the hitherto undefeated Burns Club. It is stated that this is the first de feat suffered by the latter club, for two or three years. Capitol Hill also won their game against Northbourne by 5 goals to 4, after an exciting match, which left the Hillites and Molonglo level pegging in second place, only two points each behind Burns; Northbourne are next on the list with four points, fol lowed by Canberra, which team has yet to 1 'break the ice" in official matches. Despite the loss of a number of good play ers, who have gone over to the new club, Eastlake, it is hoped that Northbourne will be enabled to ke...

FOOTBALL. RUGBY LEAGUE. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

If-M--»M"-M- M-M*>-M- M«-M-M»"»M-M-M«-M-*?-M FOOTBALL. RUGBY LEAGUE. (By " Rugger.») Great progress has taken place in this code of football since my last report, as there are now nine clubs in the Territory. At this stage I must express my regret that there is no premiership competition in existence to keep these clubs active every Saturday. What is wrong with group headquarters that they have not wakened to the fact that a com petition is required? As far as second-graders are concerned in the district, Molonglo Endea vourers have proved to be champions. Their first defeat for some considerable time was on Saturday, 19th June, when Gunning jour neyed over and won the Comino Cup from them by 8 points to 7. The Federal Rovers were defeated by the Warrigals on Saturday, 19th June, by ll to 3. The Canberra Club is just beginning to wake up, and the members are rolling up to training every Tuesday and Thursday after noon. Since the last issue they journeyed to Hall and played that t...

SPORT AT CANBERRA [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 12 July 1926

SPORT AT CANBERRA Sport is a factor which plays a prominent part in the life of the average Australian, and a stroll through Canberra on any Satur day afternoon will prove that those who are engaged in the task of building tho national capital are just as keen as their confreres in older established centres for healthy outdoor recreation. Canberra, as a garden city, should even tually become a mecca of Australian sports men, in-so-far as contests of an international and inter-State flavour are concerned, and surely it is not too much to expect that "test" matches in various branches of sport will be staged on the playing grounds of Australia's capital city, in the not too far distant years to come. This " consumma tion devoutly to be wished,'' however, to a very large extent, depends upon two impor tant contributing factors. Firstly, the neces sity for the provision of first class playing grounds, and, secondly, a due recognition of the status of the Federal Territory in the world o...
