At the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Mines last week a paper on 'Modification of' the, mining laws required to protect the mining interests of the colony,' was read by Mr, M. Eissler. This gentleman has had extensive experience -m various tarts * of the world; and represents large interests in New South Wales. Discussion on the paper was deferred to a special meeting to be held next Thursday even ing, November 11, when, in view of the impor- ; tance of the subject, it is expected; that there will be a full attendance of members. The inception of the movemec t for providing the Toronto Hebrew Congregation (wbich has an existence of not more than 35 years) with a Synagogue worthy of its import ance, is due .to Mr. Alfred D. Benjamin, the President of ,tbe f\ Holy Blossom ' Congregation and his brother, Mr. Frank D. Benjamin (sons of Ithe late Mr. David Benjamin, of London) each' of whom subscribed 5000 dollars. His Majesty pro poses to be in Jerusalem for Easter. The Commander of the Imperial yacht Hohen zollerri. has ^ received notice of the Emperor's,! intentions, and the cruiser has already been designated which is to escort the yacht. Amongst those who received the Emperor and Empress of Russia on1; their arrival in Warsaw, were the Rabbis, Dayanim and Executive of the community. The Reputation, all of whom carried Scrolls of the Law, stood beneath a t,huppah. 7 Special services : were held in the synagogues throughout Poland.

A Tale of Versailles. One day Mr. Cerfberr went to the palace of 'Versailles, to entreat Louis the Fourteenth ; m\ favour of the Isrelites. He found the Hall so ' full of courtiers, that he was compelled tb tarry a long time before he could be admitted.
