SATURDAY. APRIL lat, E87?. WE have lately had several telling ex amphis of the way in which the secret committees of our local council are worked. Not long ago, the council were mnder the necessity of appointing a hall-keeper, and the appointment was only settlel'after several storimy scenes and ain exhibition of considerable ill feelihg. As it has proved the selec tion was a fortunate one, for we le lieve the duties of the position are being performed now, in a most satis factory manner. However, that does not condone the method of appoint ment, and the result might as easily have been the reverse. Again in con nection with the appointment of junior clerk, it is freely stated, both inside and outside the council, that the selec tion had been made before a letter had been'opened or read, and that the cal ling for applications was a mere farce Before the decision, we lierd the suc cessful name freely mentioned, and, while we have nothing whatever to say against the abilities or compe...
