Published Tuesdays and Fridays. WITH WVEEKY SUPPLEMENXT. FRIDAY1, SEPTEMBEIR 27, Z8SS. W1ITn s a very few Thec Roma TalvarWOS Sl OR Tit' nosnit `rweeks acnlll amlount ing to upwards of £20,000 has been raised in Victoria for the relief of the dock laborers in London. The lmoney was subscribed spontaneously, chiefly by the working classes, affording abundant evidence that they are prosperous, and that their prosperity begets practical sym pathy for their fellows in adversity. None but those vwho belong to the hardest school of political economy will be disposed to deprecate a move moent here which has had the effect of somewhat raising starvation wages at Home. Without the help of Australia the strike of the dock laborers must have failed, and the consequent misery would have been very terrible. As it is, the dock owners were compelled to give way, and the fund raised in the colonies will do much towards alleviat ing the distress occasioned by a strike of several weeks' duration. It ...

PARLIAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Kerang Times — 27 September 1889

PARLIAMENT. With a view to disposing of the tariff, the Legislative Assembly sat from half. i past 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon until niearly 1 o'clock on Wednesday morning, I Iby which time the business was advanced to almost its final stage. All that requires to be done now is to pass the bill to give the new duties the fiull effect of law. I bctter order was maintained, but that I was due, no doubt, to the fact that the Speaker was in thle chair, and that momn aers could only speak once on each ques tion. A chanige was noticeable, too, in the imannier in which the resolutions were i disposed of and the clerk, though lie had 1 ditlicalt woik in hand, kept the House well informed of what it was doing. With the Speaker in the chair and the mace on the table, there was evidence of authority which was mnissing on previous occasions, and as a result a good record of business was achieved. When at last thie consideration of the itsems was con eluded Mr. 3lunro congratulated the columi...

Published Tuesdays and Fridays. WITH WEEKLY SUPPLEMENT. TIUESD? Y, OCTOBE11i, 1889. THE sensational event Hof The mnigwo l the past week has been the tiial and consviction of Robert Landells for the murder of Peter James. Sherlock. The facts of the case are fresh in the recollectioni of our readers, and: it is therefore unne cessary to. dwell upon them. Suffice it to say that what at first sight ap peared to be an impenetrable mystery has been-ccrtainly to a great extent -and, possibly, completely unravelled. So long an interval had elapsed be tween the death of the deceased and the discovery of his body that at first its identification appeared to be inipos sibl&. But the discovery of two letters in. the. lihing of the dead :man's coat showed that he was intilateo, with Landells, who, after the inquest, was committed for murder. At the trial it was admitted that the?delceased was killed by the, prisoner, and the jiury were called upon to decide wvlhtlier his life had been ~...
