THE WONDERFUL HOUSE WE LIVE IN, AND OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD ... The Story of Life PART WHY ARE THE LEAVES OF PLANTS FLAT? As we have already said, all green and brown plants contain a matter callcd chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the substancc which gives plants their green shade. It is a granular pigment contained in the living cells, especially the young cells, of plants. Sunlight brings out the green. So once again we sec how important sunlight is. The reds and other brilliant hues of autumn foliage are due to the combination of various minerals with the green pigment of chlorophyll. Most of the chlorophyll in plants is found in the leaves, and they are merely the tools for using it. They are mada flat and fhin in order to expose as much chlorophyll as possible to the Sun. Now while plan...
