Texan Hilarity. [Newspaper Article] — Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser — 16 February 1894

Texan Hilarity. One of tho items of news by the American 'mail shows that the well known thoroughness and spontaneity with which the people of the great re public back their opinions remains un diminished, especially in Texas. Some of the gontleincn attending a dance witom tne confines ot tliat state had an argument, it is said, concerning some trivial matter, in tho course of which one larried the spirit of contra diction so'far as to shoot another ' in his tracks.' Thereupon firing became a general order. Everyone who had barkers made them speak, with the reBiilt that a good many men, women, boys and giils were sent' to untimely graves.- Iu no country in the world prubably could such a thing have occurred, save in the. United States. The spirit of promiscuous fighting for the love oE the thing, common when tho whisky began to get at its work at good ohj Irish fnirs and wakes, was perhaps the nearest national approach to j. his Texan hilarity. But it was comparatively harmless, and...

Bullahdelah. [Newspaper Article] — Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser — 16 February 1894

Bullahdelah. (I'roJii our own Correspondent) ? At the Bullahdelah School of Arts » very large preliminary meet ing was held for the purpose of test ing' the feeling of the district regard ing the erection of a creamery at Bullahdelah. Chas Dee, Esq., who occupied .the chair, briefly explained that dairying would be far more ad vantageous 1'- in maize growing. The meeting unanimously declared in favor of the movement, and twenty-two of the principal farmers of the district promised their support. Mr J. E. Stevenson, the Secretary, was reques ted to find out the cOst of machinery, - ftc., and to convene a meeting for that day fortnight. I liaie just heard that Mr Robert Lee,, who for the past eight years lias been employed in the Telegraph Office liore, hits been appointed Post and Telegraph Master at Copeland. A meeting is being called to suitably recognise Mr . Lee's ever obliging and courteous manner, of which I shall have more to say later on. An Anarchist named Le Breton threw a ...

How to Preserve Hams. [Newspaper Article] — Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser — 16 February 1894

How to Preserve Hams, j . 'Many devices -(fays Thistle down in tlio Austr.-ilasiiui) have. been invented, first .and Inst for the purpose of protcctinpjlmcoii, hams, and ehccsu from the rav ages of t!ie nmggot fly. Tho common method of .securely wrapping each ham ar.d cheese in a cloth is unsatisfactory for many reasons, which need not be dwelt upon here, as tliey are only too well known to thos'-i who have experience of' the an noyance and damage that is caused by these 1 it-tie black flies, which frisk about so quickly on the surface, and in and out of every little crevice, should the meat be exposed/ to the open air. In visiting Calrossie Farm in South Gippsland, the other day, tho owner, Mr. D. T. M'Kenzic, who runs a bacon curing factory in connection with a large dairy and creamery, -??.showed me what appears to be .-v.' a most valuable and easy means of preventing bacon from bemy 'struck' with the maggot fly. -The remedy simply consists of v ? dipping' the hnins 111 a solutio...
