Whittlesea Ladies' Patriotic League in arranging a concert, which was held in tho Mechanics' Hall on the 20th July in aid of the League funds, is-success. Although heavy rain fell during the afternoon it did not prevent people coming a long distance. The opportunities to hear good singing are so few abat ton majority of the people it was quite a treat, and wheu the curtain was raised a full house was presented, which had a cheering effect, and a bright and a optimistic spirit prevailed. Sgt. Lister, MI..R., who was Chair man, opened the proceedings with a short address. Madame Ashley, who was in excellent voice, was received with groat applause. Social Notes. (BY THELMA.) In a recent list of casualties issued by the Defence Department we sin cerely regret to notice the names of Privates R. H. Davey, of Greens borough, A. G. Haake, of Diamond Crook, and W. J. Prior, of Research. Weo extend our sincerest sympathies to the relatives of these brave lads. Mr. M'Cullock, of Epping, has sold his farm, consisting of 265 acres, to Mr. G. Dell, of Tasmania. The Rev. W. Green, after 45 years' service in the Church of England, has just retired from active work. Mr. Green is one of the oldest clergymen in the Melbourne diocese. Ho was born at Arlington, London, in 1847,. and came to lMelbourno in 1872, being then appointed licensed reader at Mlaryborough by lBishop Perry. Ho. was ordained in 1877 by Bishop Moor house, and has been stationed- at Stratford, Seymour, Surrey Hills, and Eltbam..
