ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE BRIGADE. MANNUM. The annual inspection ot the Man uum Division of St. John's Ambulance Brigade was held on Wednesday, Jan uary 20. and was carried out hy Mr. G. F. Hussey, J.P., H.S.B., Assistant' Commissioner and chief officer of the ! South Australian District. The in speciion consisted of squad drill, rtretcher drill, and general rat-aid work. Addressing the division, Mr. Hussey reminded members tliat they belonged to an ancient order which originated in the days of chivalry, and yet was not existing on a glorified past but in the present, and was ren dering the highest and most noble service which man could render to man—voluntary aid in sickness and accidents, 'ine duty of a member of St. John's Ambulance Brigade was to apply the treatment most suitable to the circumstances until professional help was nvallable. MOUNT PLEASANT. A surprise party and farewell social was tendered last week to Mr. and Mrs. J/'. Lewis and family, who are leaving tbe district after a residence -*f ten years. About 100 fribnda assem bled, and after opening the surprise packets and the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," the party in dulged in dancing, songs -were con tributed by Messrs. Lloyd and Watson, and a recitation by Miss Nance Mangelsdorf. On behalf of the Hose bank staff, Mr. J. Henderson wished Mr. and Mrs. Lewis a prosperous future and presented them with a silver cake dish, and Miss Joy Mea kins presented Mrs. Lewis with a bouquet. Mr. Lewis suitably re sponded. Supper and dancing brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. Messrs. Dewell and Mangels dorf supplied the dance music, and Messrs. A. Harris and W. Deuno acted ' as M.C's. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis are I going to reside at Maylands.

THE VALUE OF TOP-DRESSING IN THE HD. OF LINCOLN. In (.lie Hundred of Lincoln and some of the surrounding Hunderds, say* Mr. U. Hill (Agricultural Instructor), there are many thousands of acres growing yacca and sugar gum." Some of this country has been cleared and •razed for many years, but has only provided "Very poor pasture for, live stock. Cereal growing .has been tiled without success, excepting in some cases where oate have done reason ably well. By far the greater area of land in this Hundred consists of soil of "spewy" ironstone nature, over a red puggy clay subspll. The district enjoys a rainfall of about 25 to 28 inches. In 1025, Mr. C. H. Whillas, of near Green Patch, top-dressed 100 acres of cleared land with 90 lbs. of J r, per cent, superphosphate per acre I and broadcasted 112 lbs. of subter ranean clover seed over the 100 acres, without any cultivation.
