LOOKING BACK. THE CANTERBURY PARK MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 10 February 1887

LOOKING BACK. THE CANTERBURY PARK MEET ING. [Bt Emily Bied]. Notwithstanding the _jnany counter attractions, together with them being general election day in and around Svdney, there was a good attendance at Canterbury on Saturday. The weather was fine, and the sport good. The approaches to the coursc were in an excel lent condition, but owing to the scarcity of vehicles, those who plyed for hire to and fro took every advantage they could, and the 'buses were dangerously over crowded ; in one instance no less than thirty-two pedestrians crowded one of the small cars, and the driver would have taken twice the number could they by any means have found room to hang on. As a natural consequence the horses were unable to draw their heavy load, and several stoppages took place before the railway was reached. On each occasion most of the people ...

SYDNEY BETTING MARKET. Newmarket Handicap. The past week has produced very little betting of any description whatever. Mitrailleuse at present is firm at 8 to 1 , and a rumour is extant that she is carrying something like .£20,000. Volcano has been steadily backed all through, and now stands at 10 to 1 offered, .while William Toll is at the same figure. Following are the latest prices : — 8 to 1 Mitralleuse 10 to 1 Volcano 10 to 1 William Tell 13 to 1 Lochiel 14 to 1 Bonnie Doon 16 to 1 First Giune 16 to 1 Abner 20 to 1 Vision There is no bettiiig of consequence on the Australian Cup. The Betting Market. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 10 February 1887

The Betting Market. The betting market is now more ani mated, and a few commissions on the New market Handicap have been executed. Volcano lias been backed for a good deal, ajifl iiqwia favourite. William Tell has fallen from the pride of position through an accident at Cauifield. When in train ?' iii^ liC'COllided with another horse, throw ing Benson, who died from his injuries, anil then bolted. When caught, the son of Kettledrum had his hind leg badly cut, which has thrown him back in his training. Miller does not think the injury is very serious, and William Tell may start in the Oakleigli Handicap on Saturday. Mitrailleuse is pretty firm for the Newmarket at 100 to 0, and Lochiel 100 to 7. A rumour that MMdIemarcli is off colour knocked him down to 100 to 4 offered. In the Australian Cup the bookmakers are not offering very tempting odds, the best price about Trident being 5 to 1. Thousands to 20 have been taken about the double Volcano and Trident. The Champion remains untouch...

MORNING GALLOPS. Tuesday. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 10 February 1887

MiDteNING CAEXOPS Tuesday. The day broke cloudy, with drizzling rain, but trainers were not deterred from coming down early with theft* horses, and 1 5.15 found Mr. Ifloberts on the- track, send ing Frisco and a- bay along far fair work. After them came Lancer and Home Rule, the latter liaving rather a Buujpicious off fore leg. This couple rattled albng for a mile and a-quarter at three-quacter pace, s but Lancer was never extended. Cauifield Training Notes. Owing to the absence of rain the grass has become a bit hard, but notwithstand ing there has been some good work got through. . \ Connolly has a large string in hand, principally jumpers. Bonnie Lad, who looks fresh and well, has been doing good useful work over the two miles. A very promising gentle man over small sticks is Roy. Lady Ashton, who is looking well, has been striding along on the tan. Foulsham has been sending Bonnie, Dooh, ICohai, and Chicago over the New market distance. The trio all look well, ' but the latter will require a little time.' fgSilvormine, who seems a bit low, has been allotted long useful work on the tail. The steeplechaser Marmion has been moving along for about three miles on the tan. Collins has sent Newinaster good useful work over a mile. Grace Darling has been doing easy work. Steady work generally is being done.
