ADVERTISEMENTS. To the Electors jor the Electoral District of Alberton. GENTLEMEN,—Having determined to offer myself at the ensuing election as your re presentative in the Legislature, it beenmes desira ble that I should express my : views upon the important matters likely to engage the attention of the first Parliament under our New Constitu tion, and the determination of which will so vitally, affect the interests, not only of ourselves, but of posterity. Before entering upon my political orbed, I may bo permitted to observe, that many circumstances and old associations induce mo to aspire to the honor of representing a district which must, when its resources become properly developed, occupy a proud and important position, mot only as.a pastoral, but agricultural district. The"stake which I hold in your district, may perhaps, with some, subject mo to the imputation of being actuated by personal motives ; but I would ask, is not some guarantee afforded that my best energies will bo...

LOSS OF THE MEG MERRILIES. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 27 May 1856

LOSS OF THE MEG- MERRILIES. Great was the consternation caused at this port on the arrival of the mate and three men in one of the Meg's boats, when. they announced the melancholy intelligence that, with the total loss of the vessel,, both Capt. and Mrs. Green had met with an untimely end, the cook and a lad also shared the same fate. It appears that she was, together with the Eclipse and the Mariposa at anchor at Corner Inlet, being wind bound, the. wind, however, chaging she attempted to make way, and reached the breakers, when it became calm; owing to the heavy .sea then running she drifted broadside: on to the breakers. This was about 11 o'clock on Saturday and at two o'clock the same day-she was a complete wreck, her bottom having1 separated; < from the tipper part. Her cargo consisted of coals. The Captain's unremitting exertions to avert the sad catastrophe were unavailing-. ■ All on board had to mount the main rin ging- to escape the fury of the waves. The Captain...

An immense number of poultry have been carried oft* about Geelong by a disease which seems to defy all attempts to check its progress. More Nuggtcts.—A i correspondent writing from Fiery Creek on the Sth says, that a nugget of,thirty-five'pounds weight •was found last Friday, and which is likely to take precedence of all recerit'discoveries. i "Eight "pounds "weight was nuggeted out of < the.bottom.of a claim, by a party of miners who only a week a^'o were in very needy •circumstanc...
