AMCC Athlete of the Week Tiffany Beers served with AMCC recognition Tiffany Beers was named the AMCC Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the week of October 27 - November 2. She led the Behrend women's volleyball team to a 3-0 week behind her strong offensive and defensive skills. Only a freshman, Beers was able to record 25 kills and 27 digs in the women's 3-2 win over Pitt-Greensburg. She followed up that performance with 15 kills and five aces to lead the Lions to an important win against AMCC rival, LaRoche. Beers is from Townville, PA where she attended Maplewood High School.

Lady Lions soccer captures AMCC crown By Matt Buser staff writer The Penn Stale Behrend women's soccer team hosted and won their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament this past weekend. Behrend defeated Lake Eric 2-0 in semifinal action on Saturday and won 2-1 against LaRochc in the final on Sunday. Saturday's 2-0 win against Lake Eric did not come easily. '"Lake Eric is a tough team to play." assistant coach Melissa Eging said of their opponent. "They play an unorthodox style that resulted in us drawing 15 offside penalties." Goals for Behrend were scored by Kelly Ma/.e and Katie Giles. Goalie Michelle Malatesta played strong and recorded the shutout in net. Sunday's championship game against LaRochc was a very dramatic 2-1 win. Both teams failed to convert penalty kicks, and hoth teams scored "own goals." goals scored in their own net. Women's volleyball set for conference championship By Jamie Salapek staff writer On October 28th, the Behrend women's volleyball team treated an enthusiastic crowd to a five game victory over LaRoche College in Erie Hall. The Lions had lost to La Roche in a previous match on September 24th hut came out fired up to beat their conference rival. Behrend came out strong with precise passing and accurate sets that brought the crowd to their feet. Despite losing tv\ o of the five games due to small mistakes that were vers crucial to the outcome, the Lions were able to increase their intensity as the night went on because of the importance of the match to the AMCC standings. Behrend finished up the five games with a victory. The win had special importance for senior Angela Traister who played her final home game of her three year career for the Lions. Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week Name: Jul Yamma Sport: Women's Soccer Class: Junior Position: Defender Date: October 26-Noveraber 2 Jill Yamma, a junior defender, has been named the Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week. Yamma helped lead the Behrend Lions to a 3-0 week and the AMCC conference tournament championship. "Jill played solid. She anchored the defense with her strong physical presence." said assistant coach Melissa Eging. "She also created a lot of scoring opportunities for her teammates," Eging added. Penn State Behrend defeated Buffalo State 3-1 on Wednesday and then beat AMCC foes Lake Erie, 2-0, and LaRoche, 2-1, to win the conference tournament. Behrend finished the regular season with a school record of fifteen wins and the best winning percentage in the women's soccer program's history. Yamma is a graduate of McDowell High School.

Goo Goo Dolls pack Erie Hall Sarah Edwards staff writer Erie Hall turned into the dollhouse Monday night and, the Goo Goo Dolls came prepared to bring the house down. People were lining up for the show around 6:00 and the doors opened to Erie Hall at 7:00. The opening pop rock band, Athenaeum, started playing around 8:00. Athenaeum played about 10 songs and grabbed the audience's attention with their laid back appearance and smooth lyrics. Once Athenaeum was done with their set, it was only a matter of time until the Goo Goo Dolls would take the stage. At approximately 9:00 the lights were dimmed and the candles on stage were lit as 1,000 screaming Penn State Behrend students prepared for the Goo Goo Dolls. The band came out blasting with an intense energy that shook the entire audience. Scarlet Jimenez, 01 Economics, said, "ft was a very high energy atmosphere". Parking forum draws crowd Rose Forrest layout editor Although the Student Government Association open forum didn't attract a big crowd, the forum on parking attracted enough attention to have a productive discussion. The Joint Resident Council and the Commuter Council decided to host this forum alter parking arose as such a big issue this semester. The forum, which approximately 20 students took part in, was last Thursday at 5:30 in Reed 117. The attendance between commuters and residences was about half and half. Karl Gressely, the Commuter Council President, describes, "I was worried after attending the SG A open forum that there would be a lack of attention, but I guess we picked a hot topic." Education Fraternity at Behrend looks for national recognition By Angela Rush staff writer The Behrend chapter of Kappa Delta Pi has a national chapter application that is pending approval with the national headquarters in West Lafayette, Indiana. Kappa Delta Pi, an international Honors Society for education, started in Colorado, Illinois in 1907. This organization stands for the pursuit of excellence in education, and they want to obtain the highest standards of teaching excellence. Kappa Delta Pi signifies many aspects of education. Professor Marcia Janson, an advisor and alumni of Kappa Delia Pi. was part of the biggest chapter of the organization, which is the Beta Gamma Chapter located at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Xolice l\nd Safety , REPORT: 11/5/98 Reported that a rug was stolen from Niagara Lobby. 11/5/98 Complainant reported that while working at Bruno's he was hit in the eye with a laser pointer. Couldn't tell what area it came from. Complained of blurred vision but did not request first aid. 11/5/98 Complainant reported that something exploded in the recycling bin in Lawrence Lobby. Individual found what they believed to be some chemical wrap in Aluminum foil. 11/5/98 Someone stole one of the benches on the Niagara North West porch. 11/7/98 Complainant reported that the benches from Perry Hall were stolen. It was found that the benches were on the porch of Niagara. 11/7/98 Individual reported a bat inside the theater. Despite the efforts of the cast, the bat could not be captured prior to the opening of the show. No problems reported during the performance.

The political science program at Penn State Erie will again be offering a one-credit one-week course and trip to Washington DC over Spring Break, March 7-14, 1999. The course and trip will include meetings with members of Congress, representatives of foreign embassies, and federal agency officials, as well as tours of government buildings and opportunities to see the sights of Washington. Dr. Robert Speel and Dr. Matt Davies will be accompanying students on the trip.
