Alumni Notes E. S. Erb ‘01, Hugh 3. Boyle, ‘03 and Geo. 0. Gray, ‘03, have all been seen in town during the past week. W. A. Smith, ‘01, is at the present time filling the position of assistant chemist at the Experiment Station. C. F. Bierbauer , ‘02, is employed as chemist with the American Nickel Works at 10th and State Sts., Camden, N. J. TECHNICAL REVIEW McGill University, Montreal , received durin g 1904, a renewal of a donation of $400 for a fellowship in electricity. The entire city of Grenoble, France , is lighted by electricity generated by the power of the mountain streams 27 miles away. The cost of lighting each arc light for the year is only ten dollars. At a meeting of the Board of Aldermen , of Webster Grove , Mo.. an ordinance , taxing telephone companies was passed. It ca _~ Js for a license of $25 for the first 50,000 volts and $25 for each additional 50,000 volts. In December last , tests were made in the Experimental Engineering Laboratory to determine the _relative strength under transverse loading of cold-drawn and hot-rolled elevator guides. The tests, which were made for the Standard Gauge Steel Co., showed the note-worthy result that the transverse strength under the conditions of loading was increased nearly three times in the same bar , due solely to the process of cold-drawing. Thursday, Jan. 26, 1905 EDITORIAL The article clipped from the New York Times and printed elsewhere in this issue should be of interest to students of this institution who have literary aspirations. The contest is open to any regular student in any college or university cf reccgnized standing in the United States. From among the six hundred , which we have here, there surely ought to be at least one or two who are capable of turning out a creditable essay on this subject. For details , write to President M. M. Butler , Columbia University , New York City. The Freshman class has , up to this time, made an enviable record. It may not have occurred to some of its members, but it is nevertheless a fact that this same good record would be considerably enhanced by the abolition of the annual " stunt " which calls for the abstraction of a horse, cow, or other animal from a stable in the neighborhood and its installation in the class room of an obnoxious instructor. State 34, Altoona A. A. 18 State’s basketball team met the Altoona Athletic Association tsam in the College Armory on Friday evening, January 20, defeating the visitIng five decisively by the score of 34 to 18. The game was hotly contested from start to finish , notwithstanding the fact that State was always in the lead. Captain Dunn played h ~ s usual strong game for State, although he was unfortunate in missing all goals from fouls. Hargraves played the best game for Altoona. About the ~ middle of the second half Burnes was substituted for Yeckley, who had played a magnificent game, and later Caswell and Quigley were tried out in place of Foltz and Moorhead. Altoona made no substitutions.
