The Superintendent of the Census has been compelled to write to thevarions United States Marshals to hurry up and scud in their returns immediately. The returns have been coming in so slowly that there is hardly work enough to employ the fifty or sixty clerks now appointed. Extra Session.—The Governor of South Carolina has issued a proclamation calling an extra session of the Legislature of that State, for the purpose of electing presidential electors, and, "if _adviseble, to take action for the safety and protection of the State.1 '
