Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 6 February 1896

Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees RAISING DUCKS . N many respects ducks are more easily 1 raised than any other kind of poultry , and it is surprising that so many poultry . raisers are without these profitable birJs jas an addition to their business . It is not necessary to have a large body . of water , or even a small creek , lo successfully raise ducks . Mr . James Rankin , who raises thousands of ducklings yearly , ] has found , after careful experiments ^ that he can rear them without water , except for drinking purposes , more profitably than with it ; as when frequenting bodies M water , a greater or less number are always caught by skunks , minks , turtles : and other animals , and many get lost in mire and mud . He also keeps his ducks in limited runs . It is a popular belief that water for bathing is necessary to secure a good proportion of fertile eggs , but this is disapproved by some who have thoroughly tried it . Ducks can stand colder weather than . chickens , but in-th...

GOLDBUG LUNACY . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 6 February 1896

GOLDBUG LUNACY . THE following extract from a criticism of a Chicago Tribune editorial , by J . C Robinson , in the Inter Ocean of January 11 , will meet the hearty approval of every one who believes in sound money for the whole people : It ( The Tribune ) has advocated the . cause of those who have and can afford to pay money , and has been loyal to its own interests therein—painfully against the interests of the people . Within two . or three months I hard the conversation . of a prominent English statesman and writer on political economical subjects , in talk with an old reader and disciple of the Tribune , ask the question How is it , Mr . J ., that your people can be so blind to their self-interest as to permit your Congress to legislate as it does on the money , bond , and currency interests of the country ? Out of a large number of ( from eighteen to twenty-four ) acts of your Congress on those matters , not six havo been in the interest of your own people . Every well-read s...

BERRY BULLETIN FOR FEBRUARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 6 February 1896

BERRY BULLETIN FOR FEBRUARY THE growers of berries for market 1 should realize that ordinary farm methods are not sufficient . Berries cannot be grown and marketed as easily as wheat , corn and potatoes . Berry growing , like market gardening , requires the greatest concentration of good soil , labor and thought . Too much land is the bane of most fruit growing as well as farming . Success would be more certain if acreage were divided ahd fertility , preparation and cultivation increased . Intensified farming and concentration of energy are the diamond drills that bore out success . Take counsel from books , papers , and practical growers , but let it be tempered with your own best judgment and experience . Actual knowledge and practical experience should go hand in hand . Let the beginner commence moderately , and go slow . Do only what can be well done . Nothing but the best product will pay . Use a limited variety of the best plants , producing large , firm , attractive fruit . H...

^ FARMERS' HINDI WAGON" ¦ [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 6 February 1896

^ FARMERS HINDI WAGON ¦ Spring is coming . The : manure must be spread ; , the tools must be carried to the fieldsthat fence mustv ; be fixed ; These and a ; hundred other spring duties wilh soon be upon us Tliey all : require the use of a wagon .: Shall it be the old high wheel , narrow tire wagonor the NewJdea wagon , with a ? six-inch tire and low wheel ? onevthat ^ rolls . over the , ground and does not leave ruts that can be seen all sum ^ mer . This is . a very important question , made doubly so because the times are hard and the farmer cannot afford , to buy anything unless it is a great money saver . Let us consider this point for a minute . A man buys a farm implement because it will save him labor and , therefore , money . The Farmers • Handy Wagon Company , of Saginaw , Mich ., build a wagon that not only saves labor , but its constant use makes roads and saves the fields and lanes from being all cut , up ? with ruts ; The mower , the harvester , the harrow ahd other imp...

AN INTERESTING GUIDE . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 6 February 1896

AN INTERESTING GUIDE . HW . BUCKBEE , Rockford , 111 ., has hit . _ . upon-a unique and amusing design for the cover of his Seed and Plant Guide cor 1896 . It is a county fair in colors . We could not do justice to the funny parts nor give any adequate description , in words , of the crowd of people with their individuality , jollity , their various attitudes and • costumes , young and old , men and women , some running , some quaflihg the ice cool drinks ; the various booths labeled poultry , swine , sheep , etc . ; some ladies looking at the Rockford pickle , and numbers , of course , much taken with the prizewinners from the products of Mr . Buckbee s seeds . Some of these specimens are reproduced with wonderful vividness of color and correctness of outline ; such , for example , as the Monte Cristo watermelon , king of the Mammoth s pumpkin , the Lupton cabbage , new Creole onion , and County Fair tomato . By the way , we see that a * special offer is made , including one libera...

Woman and Her Domain ;; REAL WORTH . j ; , By Emilie Clare . Mine be the real honest truth , Unvarnished , pure and free From subtile fraud , or art , or guile , Or fulsome flattery .
