SOME FOUNDATION SOWS OF THE BREED [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
SOME FOUNDATION SOWS OF THE BREED By GEO . W . BERRY , Topeka , Kan . The tendency of the sow to transmit her qualities , especially disposition , fecundity and milking qualities , through successive generations is very noticable , and may be mentioned as one of the most remarkable principles in the law of breeding . Marked characteristics of the sow can be easily traced through several generations in the maternal line . The most prolific family of sows we have ever known , the Royal Empress , has been presistently so for at least eight or ten generations of maternal ancestors with which we have been personally acquainted , and , evidence is at hand proving that another family that was formerally not so prolific has increased in prolificacy by in-crossing with the blood of the prolific sow . That other than feminine qualities may be transmitted through the sow is equally certain . Sows have been known for being the dams of good boars . In some instances noted sows have been known fo...
The Hog Market . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
The Hog Market . Extremely high prices are all right for a short time , but they seriously decrease pork consumption , and eventually do more harm than good . Prices have been Abnormally high , reaching $ 11 . 20 on March 28 , but they are beginning to recede , large breaks occurring during the past month . Hogs should sell steadily at a range of values that would net producers a reasonable profit . If this were a permanent market situation there would be little if any speculative activity in the trade , and breeders and feeders would pursue their work in an even , confident way . Pork has been so expensive that the public has begun to omit it from its bill of fare , taking beef in , preference . Since pork is peculiarly adapted to industrial people the trade receives a serious clow when industrial people abstain from it . This is what ails the market now . Since the last of March the decline has amounted to fully $ 3 on a 30 J pound hog , and heavy hogs have been the rule of late ....
A Specimen Letter [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
A Specimen Letter From time to time our readers have noted references in these columns to the original dry chick feed for young chicks . Some , however , may not know that the original and standard was first put on the market by W . F . Chamberlain , of St . Louis , and was then , as now , known as Chamberlain s Perfect Chick Feed , made in St . Louis , Mo ., as showing the record for this Feed , we present the following letter : W . F . Chamberlain Feed Co ., St . Louis , Mo . Gentlemen : —Enclosed find $ 5 In full for 200 pounds of Chamberlain s Perfect Chick Feed . We have used it for years and think it the best that can be obtained . Respectfully , Mrs . J . W . Harris , New Virginia , Iowa .

Now is the Best Time to Get Rid of Worms in Hogs . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
Now is the Best Time to Get Rid of Worms in Hogs . We are getting quite a number of letters from readers asking what is best for ridding hogs of worms and when is the best time to give the treatment . Our answer is that it is most profitable to give your hogs some efficient remedy regularly . That is , a preparation that will keep the stomach and intestines free from parasitic infection and by placing it where they can get it at will , they will doctor themselves . This plan is quite desirable because you do not realize that your hogs are infected until they become sick enough to show that there is something wrong . We have obtained so many good reports regarding the efficiency of Sal-Vet , a preparation manufactured by the S . R . Feil Co ., of Cleveland , Ohio , that we have no hestitancy in recommending our readers to use it and the method of treatment is ideal and exactly what we would advocate . Sal-Vet is a medicated salt , containing seven medicinal elements which cleanse the...
