The com pany was chartered as long ago as the administration of President Polk. It has ao loan of Oovornment credit, but a magnificent endowment of land—not lew than fifty millions of acres. It will axtend trom Duluth, at the head of Lake Superior, to Soattel, on Puget's Sound—a distanoe ot one thousand •even hundred and seventy-four miles. From Lake Superior the first one hun dred milea will be through an unbrok en forest then for seven hundred more over rolling prairies then among the mountains of Montana and Idaho to the valley of the Columbia, and thence through a pass in the Cascade range to water tide on Puget's Sound.
